Waking up next to Aiden was nothing new. We had done it for almost the entirety of our trip. But waking up naked, inhis arms, his hot body pressed against mine after a night of insatiable love making was.

We might have been virgins, but there was nothing left off the table as we explored one another’s bodies. Giving in to bliss and euphoria I thought had been exaggerated by my sisters when they talked about their behind-the-doors activities.

Yet after, as we travelled to catch our flight, we hadn’t talked about things.

Not a word about what we’d done.

We had simply leaned in and kissed before we got ready to leave Greece. One train after another until we arrived in London and started our journey back home. All without talking about the fact that we’d made love. That we’d confessed how we felt about one another.

Or had it been fucking for him?

No. I brushed the thought away. We had said we loved each other. Yet I couldn’t shake off the feeling that in the light of a new day, he felt different about me. That he regretted what we’d done but didn’t want to hurt my feelings.

Shit.

It would suck, but I would get through it. He was my best friend in the whole entire world. I never wanted that to change.

“Better?” he asked, and I nodded.

I looked toward the iPad he had set up in front of us. A movie, one of our favorites, played quietly in front of us with the captions on. We didn’t need the sound. We had watched it a million times throughout our friendship.

“I was thinking when we get home,” he started to say, and my body froze.

Would this be when he told me we needed a moment?

A break?

That things had moved a little too quickly?

I glanced up at him again when I’d found enough courage to face him head-on. He opened his mouth to say something when the flight attendant asked everyone to put their seats in their upright positions and for everyone to buckle up because we were about to land.

Relief and disappointment swirled heavily inside of me. I wasn’t sure which I felt more. Relief in case he was going to say something I didn’t want to hear and disappointment in case it was something beautiful. He sighed, and we both moved, righting our seats. His hand covered mine much like it had on every flight we’d taken.

“Aiden.” I said his name softly, and our eyes locked.

I tried not to read too much into how he looked at me or how much I wanted him to kiss me. “This was the best adventure ever. Thank you for?—"

“Gem—"

“No.” I shook my head. I needed him to know what our time together meant to me. “Thank you. I know when we land, it’s going to be a flurry of things. Going through customs, getting our bags. Our families.” He groaned because we both knew both sets would be at the gate waiting impatiently for us.

“It was the trip of a lifetime. More than I ever expected.”And at the very top of everything we saw and did, my favorite will hands down always be the fact I finally told you how I felt. Not that I actually said that.

He smiled, and when the plane started its dissent, I glanced away and shut my eyes. My hold on the armrests tightened for a moment before his big, powerful, warm hand took mine in his and held it. Aiden stroked and soothed me until we landed.

I’d done what I had set off to do at the start of our trip. He knew how I felt. I’d lost my virginity to my best friend in a way many never came close to. A way I knew would ruin me for anyone else. And I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

Unfortunately, I had been right.

From the moment the gates opened, it was a rush of things we had to do, and by the time we found our luggage, our families were already there, talking a million miles an hour to each of us. Catching us up on their lives, asking questions about everything we’d seen and every country we’d visited. Thankfully, my mom stepped in and shooed my sisters away just in time for me to see Aiden walking over to us. He simply hugged me and my mom goodbye while muttering something about seeing me soon.

And that was it.

I watched as he disappeared into the crowd, walking next to his older brother, Jayden, and mom, his luggage rolling beside him until he was gone.

And with him went my heart.
