“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

“And?”

“And…” She pulled at her top lip. “I love you. Before I tell you this… I just… I need you to know I love you.” She eyes filled with tears. I could feel how tightly wound she was. I leaned in closer, cupping her face with my hands. “Whatever happens, I want you to know that I do, and I didn’t mean… I don’t want you to think I trapped you.” My heart flipped and started to beat. Hard.

Trapped me? Did that mean?

“Gemma, I can guaren-fucking-tee there is nothing you could tell me that would change things between us.”

“You might wanna hold off on promising that,” she said under her breath. She was so whacked out with nerves that she wasn’t paying attention to how relaxed I was. How ready I was for her to tell me what I already knew.

“I wasn’t feeling well, and Tuesday morning, I got sick, and my mom suggested I take a test.”

“A test?” I repeated carefully. Hope was no longer slowly filtering through me; it was blooming brightly.

“I just thought that Mom’s Sunday dinner hadn’t settled well, but…”

“You’re pregnant?” I asked, too damn excited.

“Yeah.” Her beautiful plush lips trembled, and even though I was fucking ecstatic about it, I wondered if maybe this wasn’t what she wanted.

“Are you not happy?” I asked gently. She blinked, and little lines started to form above her brow.

“What?”

“Are you not happy? Do you not want… I know we talked about having a baby and the future in the heat of the moment but… Shit, baby girl, did I fuck up? Do you not?—"

“You’re okay with this?”

“Of course, I am.”

“Well, umm, see, that’s not all the news,” she whispered, and suddenly, time started to slow down. “So, you know how Fabi and Fernie are twins?”

“Yeah?” Her hands shook, and I dropped my hold on her face and took her hands.

“Talk to me, Gem.”

“Well, after the test I took here, Mom took me to the doctor yesterday, and they did an ultrasound—" I hated that I hadn’tbeen there, but I would make sure it was the only appointment I’d miss— “Well, it, umm, confirmed. From the dates and how far along I am?—"

“We are,” I corrected, and her gaze found my eyes. “How far along we are,” I repeated. It looked like the weight of the world had just been lifted off her shoulders. “We’re in this together. Forever.”

“Forever,” she repeated, and I felt like I could finally breathe when she smiled. “What was I saying?”

“The ultrasound?”

“Oh!” Her eyes brightened. “So, usually, it’s said that the twin gene skips a generation. Or that’s what my mom always thought. I don’t know if it’s true, you know?”

“Baby?”

“Right.” She smiled. “We’re having twins.” My knees buckled a little, and I leaned closer to her, my hands now holding on to the vanity.

“Twins,” I repeated, and she nodded.

“I know it’s a lot. And I mean, we didn’t use any kind of protection.”

“Shh.” I shook my head. My eyes dropped to the top of her thighs, then to her belly. They shut at the feel of her hands in my hair.
