“Only because you kept feeding it to them! If you didn't sneak out to a party or hook up with a new girl every night, they'd have had nothing to write about. Or maybe if you didn’t get stoned and tumble out of clubs?” Crue reminded me and my jawclenched. I should have stayed quiet. Shut the hell up and got this whole little meeting done and over with.

But again, that wasn’t me.

“I was nineteen, man! What was I supposed to be doing, knitting sweaters and baking cookies?” I asked.

“Cookies sound good right now.” Muttered under his breath and it only reminded me of the sweet little neighbor I missed because I was stuck here doing this shit.

“You do knit a mean scarf, Jax.” Mason teased easily and I sighed.

“Shut up.”

“Yeah, leave the guy alone. We were kids, we all did stupid shit. Isn't that why we're here? For the fat paychecks so we can finally get the record label off our backs?” Jamesone defended.

“I’m ready to be done with all this shit.” Sher commented and I grunted because iw as right there with him.

“This reunion is about more than money. It's about giving the fans the closure they deserve. We owe it to them - and ourselves - to do this right.” Crue reminded.

“Just say you miss the limelight, man.” I rolled my eyes.

“Maybe I do miss parts of it. Sue me for loving the music that made us famous in the first place. But don't pretend you all don't miss it too. The music brought us together. Through all the messy stuff, that was the one thing we always had.”

“I miss some things more than others.” Asher admitted. And maybe I did too. Not all of it had been horrible.

“Crue is right.” Jameson pointed out, “The music was always there for us, even when things got tough. I know I complained about the fans, but seeing their smiling faces in the crowd...there was no better feeling.”

“How poetic, Jameson. Did you rehearse that, or are you just naturally this sentimental?” Mason joked.

“Naturally. Comes with the crooner territory.” Jameson winked.

“Can you guys focus?” Crue huffed, “This is about more than closure. It's our shot at finally controlling our narrative. We're not those kids anymore. For once, we get to decide how we’re remembered.”

“Just so you know, it kills me to admit you’re right.” Asher added.

“I’ll admit it. We did kick ass together.” I mumbled.

“So are we good? We gonna bring the fire one last time for our fans?” Crue asked.

“Let’s light this shit up!” Jameson grinned and for the first time since the ball had started rolling on this whole reunion thing, we all finally agreed on something.

CHAPTER 1

JAX

I sighed heavilybefore I took a deep pull of my beer as I stared out into the darkness. I finally had my life exactly like I wanted it, and now my past had come and bitten me in the ass.

My fucking past.

What was that saying about making plans and God laughs?

I shook my head as I set the empty bottle next to the other three on the ground in front of me. Each one had the label peeled off and the cap bent in half. The craving for a damn cigarette was overwhelming, but I knew what a slippery slope the habit I had kicked to the curb seven years ago was.

My past.

My damn past.

After a decade, it almost felt like it happened to someone else. And in a way, it did. I wasn’t that guy anymore. The angry, self-entitled prick who thought the sun rose and set out of his ass. The kid who had wanted to stand out no matter what way.

The bad boy of pop.
