But like always, I kept quiet.

She smiled tightly, and I didn’t like it. I’d hurt her.Jesus, I am a jackass.“Okay, then,” she sighed and stood back up even though I could see by the way she stretched out that her legs were killing her.

She always worked way too damn much. The woman had two, sometimes three jobs at a time, and that didn’t include the baking she did from home.

“I gotta get baking?—"

“You got an order?” I cut her off and felt her gaze on me. When I glanced up at her and those damn green eyes stared down at me, all I wanted to do was stand up, pull her into my arms, and take her to my bed.

Not to fuck her senseless.

At least not at first.

There was something about Dani that brought out a softer side in me. One that wanted to be sweet. I couldn’t believe I even had that in me. I wanted to cuddle and snuggle. Hold her close and then spoil her rotten with attention until she begged for it fast and dirty.

“Yeah.” Her eyes softened slightly, and it helped me breathe a little easier. “Corey wants six dozen cupcakes for the bar’s happy hour tomorrow.” And just like that, the relief I’d felt washed away and my body tensed. But that usually happened when she mentioned her boss. Corey. The fucking asshole.

“Babe, it’s one in the morning,” I reminded her, but her shoulders simply rose and fell.

“I know, but it’s a good opportunity.”Opportunity. That fucking boss of hers was using her. Paying her pennies above what it cost her to make.

“Want me to drop some off in the morning?” she offered, again too sweet and kind for her own good. My heart fluttered inside my chest.

I had been an ass, and there she was, forgiving me. Offering some of the amazing treats she baked and the reason I had added an extra workout to my days.

Drop some off in the morning.

When I had to get my ass up to work, my sweet girl would just be getting to sleep. I didn’t like it. And in a week, I wouldn’t even be around to keep an eye on her anymore.

“Or not.” Her eyes dropped from mine. I hated it. “I mean,”—she shrugged nervously— “if you don’t?—"

“You know I love your cupcakes,” my voice rasped, and her head popped back up. Our gazes locked. But my freaking eyes had a mind of their own. They skimmed up and down her curvy body.

Dani was gorgeous.

A wet dream come to life, made just for me. She had olive skin that reminded me of the way I loved my coffee, with just a small splash of milk. Short, five feet even, if that, with thick, silky straight black hair that made my hands itch to touch and bright green eyes that made me think of jewels. She wasn’t stick thin. No, my girl might have only been twenty-three, but Jesus! She had curves where a woman should. Tits that were round and perky, almost too big for her small stature. I knew they’d be more than a handful if I ever had the honor of getting my hands on them. A round ass and hips that begged for attention, with muscular thighs and toned legs from all the walking she did at the bar.

“What’s that look about?” She snapped my sex-deprived brain out of whatever fucking spell she cast on me any time she was near.

“Nothing.” I swallowed hard, not missing the scratchiness in my voice. Dani stared at me for a moment before nodding.

“Right. Well, I should go. Good night.” She waved. Just as she turned, a thought struck me like lightning. What if I left and some asshole swooped in and stole her from me?

Stole her?No! She wasn’t mine.

I shook my head, running my fingers through my too long hair. Dani wasn’t mine.Bullshit, a small voice perked up.She’s yours, and you know it,it argued, and I knew it was my damn heart.

My heart was shouting at me to make a move.

Dani was young, thirteen years younger to be exact, but she was fucking smart. Sure of herself and what she wanted from life. More than anyone I had ever known. If I left, I could lose her. I knew it.

Unless…

“Dani!” I called out, jumping to my feet just as she reached her sliding door. When she looked over her shoulder, I didn’tthink. I ran toward her. Her beautiful eyes widened with surprise.

“What’s wrong?—"

“What would you do to get your bakery?” I blurted out. She looked at me like I was crazy, and she wasn’t wrong. I was crazy. For her.
