He grabs the phone, looking at the number before looking back at me with hopeful eyes. “I got the number wrong?”

I nod with another embarrassing giggle. “Yes.”

“You never got my message?”

“No.”

He smiles shyly. “So?”

“So?” I repeat back.

“So does that mean I still have a chance?”

I bite my lip, hiding my smile. “I’m not closing the door yet.”

His face lights up as he messes with his phone for a few seconds. My own phone vibrates in my hand a moment later.

Unknown Number:Dinner Friday?

“Mack!” the cashier calls out, setting a coffee and a to-go bag on the counter next to us.

He grabs his food before turning back to me. I smile at him before clicking reply on the message.

Me:Yes.

He breathes in deeply before exhaling with an even bigger smile than before. “I’ll text you Thursday with details.”

I wave at him as he takes a few steps backward toward the door. “Looking forward to it!” I call out as he gives me one last smile before walking out the door.

My cheeks hurt from smiling so big. The doofy look remains on my face until my drink is ready. It isn’t until my own name is called that I realize I never even asked him about Declan. I was so caught up that I didn’t even mention it. They have to be related.

And Declan had to know it was Mack who was the one who really kissed me on that trolley. A detail he conveniently forgot to mention.

A detail he’s not going to get away with.

???

I’m fuming by the time I make it back to the office. As excited as I was about finding out Mack just lost my number, it didn’t matter. The only thing I could think about on my drive back was Declan. And how he let me think I was crazy.

I toss my empty cup in the trash as I march straight toward the accounting department where he was working this morning. I’m back from lunch a little early, so there’s no one really in here right now. I scan the office, but he’s not at the spare desk he was using this morning. The sound of the printer startles me as papers begin printing out. That’s when I see him. His face is all cocky as he walks toward me.

“You,” I seethe, scrunching my face in anger.

He cocks an eyebrow, confused by my tone I’m sure. “Me?” he questions innocently even though he’s far from it.

I grab his wrist and yank him toward the empty conference room next to us as people start making their way back in the office. He doesn’t resist. His face is pure amusement by the time I swing the door shut, folding my arms over my chest and staring him down.

“Yes, princess?” he asks, grinning ear to ear.

“Mack?” I ask, tapping my fingers on my arm.

The smile is wiped from his face. “What?” he asks, trying to play it off, but I can tell by his expression that he knows exactly what I’m talking about.

“Don’t play dumb! You knew this whole time it was him on the trolley!”

His jaw tenses, and his usual teasing behavior is out the window. “It was a possibility.”

I roll my eyes, throwing my hands in the air as I turn and walk to the table before looking back at him. “Bullshit!”
