“Gummy bear?” he asks all sweetly and shit to Nicole as she walks by.

She smiles and grabs a couple. “Thanks!” she says before heading into the conference room behind him.

He looks back to me, raising his eyebrows. “See, everyone else thinks I’m charming.”

“Trust me. I know. You don’t even want to know the dirty things the ladies talk about by the coffee pot.” I click my mouse around, pretending to actually do work on a Friday. “You’re a cougar magnet.”

His eyes twinkle as he rolls up his dress shirt sleeves, exposing his forearms. “Jealous?” he teases.

He tugs at his tie, loosening it around his neck. My mouth waters at his disheveled look. I swivel in my chair, crossing my legs to maintain composure.

“Of what? Having a thirsty co-worker fan club? I don’t think so.”

He leans back, lifting his hands behind his head. “I imagine you’re the president of that club.”

“Keep dreaming, Carver.”

He goes back to clicking around on his own computer, but his smile tells me he knows I’m full of shit. “Whatever you say, princess.”

I give him a bratty look before spinning in my chair and walking to the printer to grab the invoice I printed. “I’ve seen your face far too many days in a row now.”

He tosses one of the company branded stress balls back and forth between his hands. “You’re the one who keeps inserting herself into my life every weekend.”

I bite my bottom lip to hide the squeal that wants to burst out. Relief washes over me. This is what I need. I don’t care if it makes me a terrible person. This is what I need.

“Me?” I ask, turning back toward him. “You don’t have to be attached to your brother’s hip, you know?”

He looks at me like he can’t believe my audacity, but is also proud of me for it. “Do you enjoy breaking families apart, Addison?”

“Aw, I didn’t realize I had that much power over you. Choosing me over your own brother. Wow,” I sass, plopping back in my chair and pulling myself up to my desk. I smirk to myself as I open my email up.

“Yes, you fucking do.”

My eyes dart his way, but he’s already on his feet. He glances down my body before locking eyes with me. It only lasts a moment before he’s gone.

???

“My mother is coming into town,” I sigh, grabbing my straw and sipping down the remainder of my mixed drink.

“Oh,” Tiffany says, giving me pity-eyes.

“Yeah.”

She swivels on the barstool to face me. “How come?”

“Who knows. Probably to complain about my cousin, Aubrey, getting engaged before me. She wants to go dress shopping with me. I figure if she picks out the dress, then she can’t tell me it makes my arms look too big and and shoulders too masculine,” I say, rolling my eyes.

“She still will.”

“Yep.” I wave at the bartender and order another drink when my phone lights up on the bar.

Declan:We’re leaving at 1 p.m. tomorrow. We’ll pick you up on the way.

I attempt to keep my face neutral as I grab my phone, but I can feel Tiffany’s eyes on me while I text him back.

Me:Yes, Mack told me already. You know, the person I’m actually going with?

He must not have even set his phone down before I responded because it shows him typing. I lock my phone and turn it upside down on the bar, looking back at Tiff like I’m not acting suspicious. She knows me better than that.
