She pauses, waiting to see if I want to come with. “I’ll meet you at the bar,” I say, already trying to come up with a plan to get rid of the girl as I start heading that way.

Instead of heading over to him and introducing myself, I do what anyone would do in this situation. I prop myself in between two groups of guys at the bar across from him, attempting to increase my chances of one of them offering to buy me a drink. I lean over the bar, elongating my back and pushing my ass out.

“You here alone?”

Hook, line, and sinker.

I turn to the man next to me. He’s not exactly my type, but attractive nonetheless. “My friends ran to the restroom,” I say, giving him doe eyes like I’m some damsel in distress that needs protecting while I’m alone for five minutes.

He takes the bait.

“Can I buy you a drink?”

“Of course!”

He orders both of us a drink, and I listen to him talk about himself while we wait. I keep a huge smile on my face even though I’m bored out of my mind.

I try to casually glance toward Declan to see if he’s spotted me yet. My plan was to scan the bar without stopping on him. That was the plan.

My whole body freezes when my eyes meet his staring back at me. The room fades away around me. I can tell the woman is still talking to him, but I can’t see her. I can’t move my eyes away from his.

The moment finally breaks when she touches his arm, asking him something. He looks her way only briefly before turning back to me. I give him a half smile, holding up my finger to say I’ll be over in a minute.

I’m halfway through trying to say goodbye to this guy when I feel Declan’s fingertips press against my lower back. I know it’s him without turning around. I make him wait a moment before I glance over my shoulder and give him a smile.

“Hey man, I already bought her a drink,” Mr. Talks Too Much says, puffing out his chest.

I let out a startled laugh. I open my mouth to get rid of this fucker, but Declan slides his arm behind my back, placing his hand on the bar and keeping me close. “Well, damn,” he mocks. “Lucky for me she’s worth the world, so that six dollar drink doesn’t actually entitle you to anything.”

I can’t hold back my giggle, and my body naturally gravitates closer to Declan. My reaction seems to be enough to push the dude over the edge because he huffs away to the other side of the bar.

“Fucking prick,” Declan mumbles as I turn to face him, stepping back to a more appropriate distance.

“I see your skills at making friends doesn’t improve outside the office,” I tease.

“Yeah, you obviously don’t have that issue,” he clips back, taking a swig of his drink.

I shoot my eyebrows up at his judgmental tone. “You’re one to talk. Did the six dollar drink not work on your little friend either?”

His tongue runs along his bottom lip as he leans back with a devilish smirk. He’s getting off on me being jealous. I know he is.

“You’re dating my brother.”

I roll my eyes, looking over my shoulder to see if Tiff is back yet. “I am not dating your brother. We’re just friends.” I turn back to face him. “And whatever happened to you waiting for me?” I ask sarcastically.

“Jesus, Ad!” he laughs. “It was a drink. I didn’t fuck the lady.” His eyes fall down my dress, and he lowers his voice. “You’re still my girl.”

I’m not sure what to say, so we stare at each other until Tiff breaks the silence as she approaches behind us with Ken. “Wow! They really do look alike,” she says to me before giving Declan a once over. “So you’re the man who’s been causing all this trouble for my poor Addy.”

“Tiffany!” I scold, trying to play off the fact that most of our conversations have revolved around either Mack or Declan lately.

Declan plays innocent. “What exactly has she told you that I’ve done?”

Tiffany lowers her voice as she leans in close to him, but I can still hear her. “You hurt her, you die. You understand? I let that Chris fucker have a free pass only because she begged me.”

Declan smiles at me as he listens to her. “Well, if anyone is worth dying for, it’s her.”

“Oh. My. God.” I grab Tiff’s hand. “Okay, you’ve seen him. Now let’s go dance. Ken, you coming?”
