I lean my head back, closing my eyes for a moment. “I’m sorry, what exactly are we talking about here?”

He shifts uncomfortably in his seat. “Maybe I should have just done this over the phone,” he jokes.

I laugh, easing some of the tension between us. “You’re making me nervous.”

His eyes soften as he squeezes my hand one more time. “I just want to make sure I wasn’t reading our situation wrong. The last thing I’d want to do is to hurt you.”

Oh, wow. I think I’m being dumped. I’m being dumped by someone I was never even with. That actually surprisingly makes it a little worse. Not as painful and I’ll be over it by tomorrow, but still somehow worse.

“You want to make sure I didn’t want something more serious?” I ask, completing his thought for him. “We’re good, Mack. You got a new girlfriend or something?” I tease.

He leans back, scratching the scruffle along his jaw. “Uhm… I guess I need to be more clear. Declan told me everything.”

My stomach drops. “Everything?” I whisper back like maybe he’ll change his mind.

“You do know that he’s my twin brother, right?” he asks sarcastically.

I squeeze my eyes shut. “Well, this is fucking embarrassing.”

He laughs. “Don’t be embarrassed. I just wanted to make sure we’re good.”

My shoulders drop when I realize this is all my fault. “You guys fought?”

He shrugs. “He crossed some lines he knew he shouldn’t have. He’ll be fine. He got what he deserved. At least he was honest and eventually told me.” He smiles at me. “That’s why I’m here. Because I’m a better man than him, and I know not to go after my brother’s girl. I’d love to stay friends though.”

“Woah, hold up,” I laugh. “I amnotDeclan’s girl. What exactly did he tell you?”

He glances around to avoid answering the question for a few moments. “Uhm… I think I might already be too involved.”

“But?” I push.

He gives another nervous half laugh, half sigh. “But regardless of what you guys decide, I could never put myself in a position where I could potentially hurt a relationship with someone my brother has… uhm…” He pauses again, trying to find the right words. “Oh, fuck it. Who my brother has feelings for.”

“Did he fucking tell you that?” I can hear the anger in my own voice, and I know it’s irrational. I can’t control it though. My adrenaline is pumping, making my heart beat harder in my chest.

Mack stands from his chair, throwing his empty cup in the trash. “You know, I really probably shouldn’t get any more involved than I already am.”

“Sit the fuck down, Carver. We’re talking.”

He laughs as he sits down, waiting for me to finish my own coffee. “You know at first it didn’t make much sense, but now I can see why you two work together. Both fucking assholes.”

Chapter 17

Mack wouldn’t fucking reveal anything more. Stupid people who actually have relationships with their family. Ugh!

I’ve only become more angry since I left. That man really had the audacity to tattletale to his brother on me? What if I actually did want to date Mack? Or even if I didn’t, he didn’t have to throw me under the bus like that.

It’s bothering me more than it should. I’m clinging to anger because I know deep down I’m avoiding admitting to myself what I’m really upset about. If I don’t hang out with Mack anymore, then I don’t have an excuse free way to hang out with Declan. Fuck! That thought bothers me. So much so that I find myself outside his door.

It’s too late now to save myself, so I fully embrace the crazy, pounding my fist against his door. “You better be home, fucker,” I mumble, continuing to bang on the door.

The elevator doors ding open, bringing that stupidly handsome man up with it. Declan steps out into the hall with confusion all over his face. I wish he didn’t have to look so fuckable. He’s changed out of his business casual attire to straight up casual. His jeans hang low on his hips, and his hair barely peaks out of his backward baseball cap.

“You,” I seeth, narrowing my eyes and walking toward him.

“It’s nice to see you too, princess,” he says, stepping around me to his door.

“You have some nerve, you know that?” I shout at his back.
