She can’t hold eye contact, making her words less convincing. “Myself,” she mumbles, turning away from me.

“Mom!” I cry, throwing my hands out. “Why are you encouraging this?”

She shrugs her shoulders, not having a care in the world about it. “I think it’s a great idea! There’s nothing wrong with a woman taking control of her sexuality, Mack.”

I close my eyes, trying to block the words coming out of her mouth. “Mother!”

“Oh hush,” she says, waving me off. “Hurry up and finish that watermelon so we can eat.”

Thea snickers, trying to sneak past me, but I grab her arm, walking her out to the dining room. “I swear to God, Thea, if these photos end up online.”

“What?” she asks, not allowing me to finish my thought. “You’ll what? What are you going to do about it?” She crosses her arms over her chest, challenging me.

“Stop testing me,” I grit through my teeth.

“Stop pretending to be my dad.”

“Stop acting like a brat so I don’t have to.”

“Stop getting off on controlling me.”

“Stop making me want to.”

The words are out of my mouth before I can stop them. Thea opens her mouth to respond, but nothing comes out, which is telling because she never lets me get the last word in during an argument.

Out of nowhere, the corner of her mouth tips up, and I know I’m done for. I could tell from her face the moment she knew she was taking back control. She steps forward, lightly placing her hand along my chest and up my shoulder as she stands on her tiptoes to whisper in my ear. “Don’t feel guilty. I think about you when I touch myself too.”

The evil smile on her face when she falls back flat on her feet, fucking hell! She holds eye contact the whole time she’s stepping back, completely unphased. A quick wink and then she’s gone, back in the kitchen grabbing the forks.

What the actual fuck? Why did she say that? Why the fuck did she say that?

Four Missed Calls from Trevor

Shit. I set my backpack on my bed and close my bedroom door to call him back. Trevor rarely calls me instead of texting, so I know something must be up. I hope this isn’t about the party after the homecoming game on Friday. I already told Jenna I could meet her there. Trevor was supposed to drive, and if he can’t do it, then I’m going to have to DD.

“Mack?” Trevor answers. He doesn’t sound right like he’s in a panic.

“Yeah, hey man, what’s going on?” I ask.

There’s a pause as I hear Trevor’s dad screaming in the background. Every profanity you can think of. His parents are always fighting, but this is something different. I stand from my bed, immediately knowing something happened. My first thought goes to Thea. What happened to Thea? Is she okay? Did something happen?

Trevor must have gone into a room and closed the door as the sound of yelling muffles. “Mack, I don’t know what to do,” his voice trembles.

“What’s going on?” I almost yell, panicking at the sound of his voice. I’ve never heard him even remotely close to crying, but I can tell his voice is raw.

“She’s leaving. She left. My mom left. All her stuff was packed when we came home from school.” The words are tumbling out of his mouth almost faster than I can hear them, and his breathing is escalating. “There was so much screaming, and she took off. She’s not coming back.”

I try to stay calm, but I’m angry for him. I’m angry for his hurt. “Trev, it’s going to be oka-.”

“No!” he screams. “No you don’t fucking understand! You didn’t hear her! You didn’t hear the things she said!” He gasps for breath, trying to hold it together. “You didn’t see what she did to Thea! Mack! She was screaming at her. Telling her how she’s abusive just like her dad. How no one will ever love her either. All she’s ever tried to do was be perfect for both of them. All she’s ever tried to do was be perfect. And this is how they repay her?”

He’s angry for his sister, but I feel the pain and rejection in his voice. She’s walking out on him too. “I don’t know what to do! Thea keeps saying she’s fine, but she can’t be fine. I don’t know what to do, Mack. She just keeps saying she’s fine. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what to do…” His voice fades out into more panicked breathing like he’s trying to hold it together.
