“Someone was,” I add on.

His eyes fall for a moment, and I pull the blanket up, realizing I’m only wearing a thin tank top with no bra that I threw on for pajamas. I glance to the side to try to keep my composure when I remember I never put on pants, only my boyshort undies. It’s not that big of a deal. If he happens to see, he’ll probably just think they’re really, really short shorts.

“We didn’t run out of bedrooms inside, did we?” he questions like maybe he hasn’t slept long enough to sober up yet. Maybe I haven’t either.

“No,” I laugh before cringing at the real reason. “I don’t even want to think about it, but I could hear Trevor and Jasmine uhm… you know.”

“Oh God,” he groans. “Sorry I asked.”

“Me too,” I laugh. “I couldn’t sleep in there anyway. I thought the sound of the water might help.”

“Still stressed about school?” he asks, looking at me with more concern.

I look away, feeling a little embarrassed. I basically had a breakdown last week while the guys were watching football, and Mack followed me into my room and wouldn’t leave until I told him what I was stressed about. I felt guilty for making him miss the game, so I didn’t even try to hide that I was feeling anxious about the major I was studying. What if I changed my mind and didn’t want to go into this field or that field or any other field. Finals were stressing me out, and I had to have a midlife crisis before I even got to midlife. I should have taken the summer off instead of signing up for more classes.

“Yeah, I guess. Just life. But mostly, I think it was the fifth shot during drunk Uno.” I give his shoulder a soft shove.

He laughs. “Not my fault you suck at it.”

“Maybe not, but it was your fault that you were following me around and purposefully beating me at every single thing we played tonight. Are you trying to kill me with alcohol poisoning?”

“Following you?” he asks like I’m a crazy person. “You challenged me to every single one. Not to mention you were the one who made the stakes. You know I would have made the loser do something so much better than a boring shot.”

“I felt bad you were all alone. Where’s what’s her name?” I ask.

I know her name. Her address. Her sign. Her dog’s name. Her last three boyfriend’s occupations.

“Annette?” he asks. “That wasn’t going anywhere.”

“Oh no?” I ask, pretending to be surprised to cover that I’m happy.

“Yeah,” he says with an awkward laugh like he’s hiding something.

I push him. “What?”

He turns his head to me before looking back up at the roof. “No, I don’t want to tell you this because it’ll go to your head.”

I shimmy closer and place my hand on his arm. “What?” I giggle. “Tell me!”

“No. I can’t.”

“Carver!” I whine, grabbing his ear.

“Ow! Okay! Okay!” he protests. He gives a big sigh before smiling at me. “She didn’t like that we hung out so much.”

I lean my head back in surprise. “Wait, what? Me and you?”

He cringes, looking back up at the roof again. “Yeah.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“I know,” he agrees. “I told her you’re like a little sister, but she was so paranoid.”

I sit up next to him. “Wait, are you being serious? That’s why you broke up? Because of me?”

He glances at me before rolling his eyes. “Don’t flatter yourself. But yeah. Because of you. Brat.”

My face must be frozen in a state of shock because he shoves my arm. “Stop that.”
