“Why?” she demands.

“We were leaving the club, and some assholes thought they’d start something. We took care of it, but by the time we realised Axel had disappeared, the police were already there and coming for us.”

I don’t give a shit about their story. I need to know what happened to Odi and why she’s so worked up.

“Odi, princess, I’m fine,” I tell her. If she’s already this freaked out about me coming home without the others, there’s no point in telling her that I can’t remember shit and the last time I felt this bad I was waking up after my first time in my father’s metal box.Fuck. “But what happened to you?”

“Huh?” She cocks her head.

“I’m fine,” I repeat again. “But your lip is split. Who hurt you?”

“Are you though?” Odi demands, seeing the realisation dawn on my face. “Areyou fine? Because I’ve got a dead body in the basement which would suggest otherwise.”

”Jesus, mate, what did you do last night?” Kaiden asks, staring at me in shock.

I shrug but my eyes are wide. I have no idea. “I don’t remember.” Don’t remember a bastard thing. “I just want to know why Odi’s hurt.”I hope to fucking god it’s nothing to dowith me. There’s no way I would hurt her. Never. No matter what was coursing through my system. I couldn’t.

“Not him, you idiot. Me!” she screams like a banshee, making me wince. “What didIdo? I killed the fucking bitch who dared try to hurt him.”

“Someone tried to hurt him?” Zie asks, concerned.

Bitch?“As if a woman could harm me.” I chuckle at the idea, Odi’s words not really sinking into my foggy, drug-addled brain. She’s the only woman I would give the power to be able to hurt me.

Then the smile falls from my face as it dawns on me. What she’s saying. The fuzzy dots in my memory slowly begin to connect. “I think my drink was spiked,” I add, scrubbing my hand through my still-damp hair.

“No shit,” Odi deadpans. “You came home banging and crashing around like a herd of rhinos. It woke me up and scared the shit out of me. So I came downstairs to investigate.”

“None of this makes any sense,” Zie murmurs. Yeah, to you and me both.

“Imagine my surprise when I find my fucking husband-to-be with that bitch balanced on his balls!” Odi yells.

“What?” I blanch. Zie and Kaiden whirl on me, looking ready to kick my ass. “That’s not possible.”

“Is it not?” Odi demands. “Let me see, how are you feeling this morning, dear? Like you went five rounds in the ring with a pro? Got zero recollection of anything that happened last night? Pounding, fuzzy head? Dry mouth like you’ve not drank anything in days? Any of this sounding familiar?”

“How do you know?”

“Because you were drugged, and because I remember only too well what the after effects were like!”

“Even if I was drugged, if you thought for a second that I would cheat on you, there’s no way I would have lived to seeanother day,” I point out as pieces of the puzzle slowly come together.

“Well at least you’ve got one thing right. I was about ready to kill you until I realised that you were barely conscious and incapable of seducing anyone. That fucking cunt drugged you, and tried to take advantage while you were out of it. I found you both just in time. I don’t think she managed to do anything more than strip off and rub her skanky ass all over your lap.”

“Who was it, Odi?” Zie urges.

“Eowyn.”

“The wedding planner?” Kaiden barks a laugh, and I scowl at him.

“This isn’t fucking funny. What the fuck was she playing at?” I mutter, more to myself than anything else. I knew she wanted to be The Doe and wasn’t happy when I passed her up in favour of Odi, but she’s been supportive of the union, helping to plan everything. “I knew she still wanted me, but I was sure that seeing howtogetherOdi and I were that day in my office it would finally send home the message that I’m taken – happily so – and she’d move on.”

“Well the good news is she told me exactly what she wasplaying at,as you put it. She wanted you to get her pregnant so that she’d be yours. Your heir would take precedence over your marriage to The Doe. The even better news is that shehasmoved on now…to another realm. If I had to put money on it, I’d say she’s in hell.”

The three of us stare at Odi in disbelief.

“She’s dead?” Zie asks, the first to recover.

“Yep. And it ain’t pretty, so you’ve been warned,” she says, turning and walking towards the kitchen. Before she disappears from view, she calls over her shoulder, “She’s in the basement. Well, what’s left of her. Go and see for yourself if you like, but don’t be long. I’m making pancakes for breakfast.”
