“I already did,” he replies with a smirk and mischievous eyes. I gape at him for a beat then laugh, shaking my head.
“So full of surprises. If you continue with all these jokes, you’ll be pursuing a career in stand up comedy before the year is out.”
Instead of replying, Axel leans forward and accepts my offering, taking the cake and the entire blade into his mouth. His eyes are laser-focused on mine the entire time as he licks frosting off my knife.
“Delicious.” His tone is low and sultry and makes me shiver. I don’t think we’re talking about cake anymore.
My face flushes with heat as Axel’s words hang in the air between us. His gaze is so intense, it feels as if he’s undressing me with his eyes. The atmosphere around us suddenly seems to shift, the energy crackling with an undeniable tension.
A mischievous smile tugs at the corner of his lips, and I can’t help but reciprocate. This playful banter has never been a hallmark of our relationship but I have to say I am loving this lighter, more carefree side of him.
Leaning closer, Axel’s breath brushes against my ear, sending a shiver down my spine. “I have another surprise for you,” he whispers, his voice low and husky. My heart quickens its pace, anticipation coiling within me.
Before I can respond, Axel takes my hand and leads me away from the crowd, his touch igniting a trail of sparks along my skin. Our guests watch curiously as we disappear into the secluded garden behind the reception hall.
Once we’re alone, Axel turns to face me, his eyes filled with a mix of desire and adoration. “I couldn’t wait any longer,” he confesses, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. “I have something I’ve been wanting to give you all day.”
Curiosity blooms within me as he reaches into the inner pocket of his jacket. He withdraws a small velvet box and holds it out toward me, his gaze never leaving mine.
With trembling fingers, I open the box to reveal a delicate diamond necklace, glimmering in the soft evening light. My breath catches in my throat as I take in the sheer beauty of the piece. The pendant is an intricately designed heart, crafted with meticulous detail, and the diamonds seem to dance and sparkle with every movement.
“Oh, Axel,” I whisper, tears welling up in my eyes. “It’s stunning. Truly.”
He smiles, a mixture of nervousness and excitement shining in his eyes. “I wanted to give you something that would remind you of this day, of our love,” he says softly. “Something that would always be close to your heart.”
I reach out to touch the necklace, and a surge of warmth floods through me despite the cool metal against my fingertips, as I realise the significance of his gift.
“It’s perfect,” I say, my voice filled with emotion. “Thank you.”
Without hesitation, Axel takes the necklace from its box and gently clasps it around my neck, his fingers brushing against my skin, sending a wave of electricity through me. As he steps back to admire his handiwork, a sense of completion washes over me.
Axel’s arms wrap around me protectively, and I lean into his embrace. We stand there in silence for a while, basking in the warmth of our love and the enchantment of our surroundings.
“Let’s get this dance over and done with and then hopefully we can sneak away so I can spend some time with you alone, wife.”
I nod eagerly, a playful glint in my eyes. “I can’t think of a better way to end this night,” I reply.
We make our way back towards the reception hall, hand in hand, and the sound of music fills the air as the band starts playing the song. Axel chose it, so I’m waiting to hear what he selected. Our guests all turn their attention towards us, smiling and clapping as we step onto the dance floor, but as the opening bars of Ruelle’s ’I Get To Love You’ begins to play, all I focus on is him. This song is beautiful.
As we move together, our bodies swaying to the rhythm of the music, an overwhelming sense of happiness washes over me. The room seems to fade away, leaving only Axel and me in our own little world as he murmurs the words of the song in my ear. His touch on my waist is electrifying, his gaze unwavering as he shifts to look deep into my eyes. The love and adoration that radiate from him are palpable.
As the song comes to an end, Axel spins me around one last time before pulling me into a gentle embrace. The applause andcheers from our loved ones surround us, but all I can focus on is him.
He leans in close, his lips brushing against my ear. “Let’s make our escape,” he whispers huskily, sending shivers down my spine.
Nodding eagerly, I take his hand but only make it two paces before I stumble. Shots ring out, and chaos erupts all around us. The air is filled with screams and the unmistakable sound of gunfire. Panic sets in, and I find myself frozen with fear, clutching onto Axel’s hand for dear life. Turning to him for direction, Axel’s face pales as he scans the chaotic scene unfolding before us. His grip tightens around mine, his eyes flashing with determination. But then he’s staggering backwards. Falling in slow motion. His expression morphing into one of shock.
He hits the floor and it breaks my trance. I cry out, crashing to my knees beside him and sobbing as blood blooms and spread across his chest.
“Axel!” I sob. I mean to scream but my voice is broken. Alongside my heart.
I cradle Axel’s head in my trembling hands, desperately trying to stop the inevitable from happening. The chaos around us seems distant and blurred as my focus narrows solely on him, on the love of my life who is now fighting for his life. Tears stream down my face, mingling with the blood staining his shirt.
“Stay with me, Axel,” I plead through choked sobs, my voice filled with desperation. “Please, don’t leave me.”
His breath comes in short gasps, and I can see the pain etched across his features. But there’s still a glimmer of determination in his eyes, a silent message that he won’t give up without a fight.
“I...I love you,” he manages to whisper, his voice barely audible amidst the chaos. “You. Rose. The baby. Don’t forget that.”
