“Nah. Such a small target requires the precision of a knife,” I quip back, making Kaiden roar with laughter once more.

I’m glad he finds it funny. I need to laugh too. The distraction is the only thing keeping me together.

I shot him.Thinking about it sends pain lancing through my heart, and suddenly I’m not so sure the tears rolling down my cheeks are from the laughter.

I love him. But I want to hate him. I wanted to hurt him. I’m not sure I can ever forgive him for this, whatever the circumstances may be.

Because I’m absolutely certain that there must be extenuating circumstances at play here. Despite accusations spat at him in anger, he’s no more a rapist than I am. But I’m not ready to hear him out.

“I can’t go back to the flat, Kai,” I tell him softly. He immediately sobers and thinks for a moment, head cocked to the side, before nodding once and rattling a message off on his phone. “Don’t tell him!” I panic.

“I would never. I’m arranging for us to go somewhere tonight. Somewhere Axel wouldn’t ever think to look for us.”

“Oh? You keep secrets from him too?”

He flashes me a dark look. “You have no idea. There’s a safe house in Hallows Creek we can use.” His phone beeps again. “My buddy just confirmed it.”

“Hallows Creek? Isn’t that?—”

“Gods’ territory? Yeah. But it’s somewhat neutral ground. I’m friends with the Pres of one of the biker gangs there.”

“Pres? Biker gang?” Fuck, I must be in shock from the night’s events because I swear Kaiden’s talking another language right now. Apparently I can handle them basically being the mafia, but talk of motorcycle clubs is a step too far for me?Figures.

I snort.

“Yes, babygirl. As well as the war between the Gods, the Trinity, and our fathers, there’s a healthy dose of drama thrown in from the rival biker gangs of the three towns too.”

“Deathfalls has a biker gang?” I gasp. Thinking back on my – admittedly what I can now acknowledge as rose-tinted picture perfect – childhood home, I can’t imagine anything as…well, as crass as a biker gang, sullying the streets where we grew up.

Kaiden obviously reads my thoughts in my expression because he chuckles and holds out his hand for me.

Fuck the safety of the seatbelt, nothing is safer than Kaiden’s arms. And I’ve decided that Idowant to be touched after all. Just not by Axel.

Unclipping myself so that I can slide into his embrace, the second his strong, warm arms are wrapped around me I relax, ready for story – distraction – time.

“Deathfalls is home to the Death Angels, a gang that my father was once a part of, before his drinking and gambling and being too tightly linked with theAbbot Corporationmade him too dangerous to keep around. I have contacts there, but I’m not exactly welcome.”

I nod. Idoremember Mr Kelly having a motorcycle when I first moved in, but he seemed to get rid of it shortly after. Right around the time he got real friendly with Axel’s dad.

“Then, in Black Hallows, we have the Black Sinners. They’re under our control in exchange for a relative amount of freedom. There are other MCs in town, but the Sinners are the main gang.”

“Okay. So why not go there?”

“Because while they answer tous, I wouldn’t put it past any of them to sell us out to Axel, even if I told them not to.”

“Because he’s the head honcho and everyone wants to be on his good side.”

“Correct. Hence crossing the border into Hallows Creek. The Hallowed Saints are mean, dangerous, sons of bitches but they don’t have anything to do with The Gods, and like I said, I have a friend or two within their ranks.”

“The Pres is pretty high up, isn’t he?” I ask with a wry smile.

Kaiden winks. “I was being modest.”

“I didn’t recognise that look on you,” I quip back, making him belly laugh once more.

“Will it take long to get there?” I ask.

“Not too long. But we have enough time if you need a distraction or two.”
