It’s a Hail Mary, but it’s the best idea I’ve come up with so far.

If she’s got a bug, she needs to be quarantined. It can’t be a coincidence that she’s been sick all week if she’s refusing to eat. It’s either that or she’s pregnant…

Fuck. no. There’s no fucking way. That’s not fucking possible. Axel has her on birth control. He told us.

I need a fucking drink.

A girl has moved in next door to Kaiden and Zie. I see her playing outside sometimes. Zie doesn’t seem to like her but Kaiden said she’s alright.

I’m intrigued.

I’m not that used to girls.

The ones in my class at school don’t seem to like me much, but that new girl stares right at me when I see her, and she doesn’t look scared of me at all.

I sort of want to get to know her a bit.

A sudden pounding in my head steals my sleep from me. It takes me a moment to work out where I am and what’s going on.

The hammering on the door to the girls’ flat reaches a fever pitch before abruptly stopping. There’s a low murmur of voices but I can’t make out what’s being said. It’s bound to be Kaiden trying to worm his way into the flat to see me, but so far the girlshave been amazing at keeping him out without me even having to explain why.

I can tell they’re getting sick of it though.

Rolling over, I check the time on my new phone. It’s two in the morning! No wonder the girls are fed up. Lou is sternly telling whoever is at the door to wait there.

Flicking back the covers and getting to my feet, I’m fully prepared to march out there and read him the riot act when the door to Lou’s room opens suddenly and she’s standing in the doorway, looking ashen.

“Peony!” Kaiden screams at the top of his lungs. I wince.

“I’m so sorry, has he been drinking?” I grimace apologetically.

“You need to go, Odi.”

“I’m sorry. I’ll get rid of him.”

Lou shakes her head. “You need to go with him. Get dressed. Quickly!”

Just as I’m about to demand if she’s kicking me out because of this, I notice how pale she is, the way her hands are trembling slightly, and the urgency in her voice.

“Lou?”

“There’s been a fire?—”

“What?”

“I fucking told you not to say anything!” Kaiden thunders, appearing beside Lou. “Get whatever shit you need, Odi. We have to go.”

“W-what’s happened?” I ask as dread swirls my stomach.

Tonight’s the first night I’ve managed to keep any food down, and it’s now looking like I may have spoken too soon.

“Fire in the flat.” Kaiden’s words are like lead in my stomach, but it doesn’t stop the churning sensation.

What isn’t he telling me?

On stiff but wobbly legs, I turn and grab my hoodie and slide my feet into my boots. What else do I need? I grab my old phone and the new. I don’t know why.

“Kaiden? Where are we going?” I ask as he grabs me by the hand and starts to pull me along the corridor.
