“I saw Rose’s room. And the nursery,” I whisper, my own voice laced with emotion. “I should take the test.”

Axel shakes his head. “Wait. Let us do it together. Once we’re married.”

“You don’t want to know now?”

“I want something to look forward to.”

“What if it’s negative?”

“Then we keep trying. That’s the fun part.”

“What if I am…and it’s…not yours?”

“Do you really think I’d care? It would change nothing, Odi. You. Are. Mine. Rose is mine. And this baby that I am absolutely certain is already growing in your belly, will be mine too, regardless of DNA.”

He lowers his head until his lips find mine.

Our kiss is a culmination of all the emotions swirling between us, a testament to the love and longing that has bound us together for so long. As our lips meet, the world around us fades into insignificance, and all that matters is the warmth and tenderness we share in this intimate moment.

When we finally pull away, Axel rests his forehead against mine, our breaths mingling in the cold night air. “I’ve missed you,” he murmurs, his voice laced with vulnerability. “No one challenges me like you do.”

A surge of emotion wells up inside me, threatening to overwhelm my senses. “I’ve missed you too,” I whisper, my voice trembling slightly. Embarrassed, I add, “No one drives me to violence like you do.”

We chuckle, but then silence envelops us as we lie there on the rooftop terrace, the stars sparkling above like tiny beacons guiding us forward. It feels as though everything I’ve ever yearned for is within my grasp.

“I never stopped loving you,” Axel admits softly, his fingers tracing delicate patterns on my back. “Even when we were apart, your presence lingered in every corner of my heart.”

Tears prick at the corners of my eyes, and I tilt my head to look into his deep, soulful gaze. “I never stopped loving you either,” I confess, my voice filled with unwavering certainty. “Even when I hated you for the pain you were causing me, I knew it only hurt because of how badly I loved you.”

Axel’s hand moves to cradle my cheek gently as he leans in to kiss me once again.

“I’m done hurting you, princess. You have my word.”

The gentle touch of his lips against mine ignites a fire within me, a flame that had been smouldering for far too long. I deepen the kiss, taking control and rolling my body on top of his. Axel pulls me even closer, as if trying to bridge the physical and emotional distance that has separated us for so long. Every touch, every caress carries with it the weight of our shared history, the pain and the love that has shaped us into who we are today.

Eventually we break apart, and Axel’s eyes widen. “Whoa, turn over, peony. Look at the stars,” he whispers, a childlike wonder colouring his tone.

Amazed by the awe in his voice, his enthusiasm infectious, I eagerly comply. As I shift to gaze at him, I’m met with the brilliance of his eyes, reflecting the dance of stars above. A soft smile graces his lips.

Above us, a meteor shower unfolds, a celestial display of shooting stars that steal my breath away. Each streak of light paints a temporary masterpiece against the canvas of thecosmos. Axel’s gasp of amazement echoes mine, and together, we watch in silent awe.

The stars cascade like liquid silver, leaving trails of radiant stardust in their wake. It would be easy to assume the world was ending with the lethal brilliance streaking across the sky, but to me it looks like a cleansing. The universe helping us shed the heartache we’ve been carrying for too long.

In the embrace of Axel’s arms, under the celestial fireworks, all my worries dissipate.

We share quiet moments, lost in the infinite expanse of space. Our world may be dark and dangerous, but in this shared moment, we are at the centre of it all, bathed in the romantic glow of the meteor shower, as if the universe itself is acknowledging our love story written in the stars.

We watch, hand in hand, until I can no longer resist the pull between us. I understand when people in romance novels describe their attraction as being magnetic, but this is so much more than that. We’re not really pulled towards one another, it feels more like there’s an invisible force driving us together no matter how much we fight it.

And fighting my love for Axel Abbot is exhausting. It’s the wrong kind of fight to be wasting energy on.

So I give in.

Reaching up, I gently cup his cheek and turn his face to meet mine. He must see the longing in my expression because his eyes widen in surprise for a split second before my lips slant over his in a needy, almost desperate kiss.

The taste of him is like a bittersweet melody, a combination of familiar comfort and the intoxicating thrill of something new: my submission. Our mouths move in perfect harmony, a dance choreographed by desire and fuelled by the undeniable connection that has always existed between us.

Axel responds with equal fervour, one hand tangling in my hair as he pulls me impossibly closer. A shiver runs down my spine as he explores my body with his free hand, his touch like little electric shocks making me jolt and gasp.
