“And she kissed you?”

He shook his head. “I didn’t see her at first. She pulled that shit where you sneak up behind someone and cover their eyes with your hands. She whispered, ‘Guess who?’ in my ear, so I’m guessing that’s where the lipstick came from. She wanted me to believe it was you.”

“Did you?”

He tilted his head and gave her a “get real” smirk that was ridiculously charming. “Princess, I know the feel of your soft, curvy body against mine, the sweet sound of your voice, and how you smell like roses. Darlene is too tall and bony, her voice goes through me like nails on a chalkboard, and that perfume she bathes in is cloying.”

Gia went from pissed at Mark and jealous over Darlene, to happy as hell in a split second. Xander always knew the right things to say.

“I’m assuming you gave her the brush-off?” she asked giddily.

“In no uncertain terms. Told her to stay the hell away from you too.”

This time, there was no hesitation as Gia threw herself into Xander’s arms, his big bear-hug-like embrace exactly what she needed.

“My hero,” she said teasingly as he pressed her cheek against his warm chest.

“Hero is nice,” he murmured. “But I still prefer Daddy.”

She lifted her head, her gaze on his. She wasn’t sure what he saw there, but it made him growl low in his chest.

“It’s still an hour or so until midnight, baby girl. We can’t leave until the bride and groom do, so you’re going to have to be careful where you shoot those pretty bedroom eyes.”

She laughed, until she realized he wasn’t kidding. Xander gripped her hips, tugging her against him, letting her know exactly what kind of impact she was having on him.

“Come on,” he said. “We need to burn off some of this energy while we wait for midnight. Besides, I want to dance with my girl.”

He grasped her hand, leading her to the dance floor. “Thought you didn’t like fast dancing.”

“I don’t,” he said as he spun her around, “but I do like bumping and grinding.” He wrapped his arms loosely around her waist, his thighs cradling the back of hers as her ass brushed his crotch.

She wasn’t sure how he thought this was going to help his current situation, but she sure as hell wasn’t going to complain.

They remained on the dance floor all the way to midnight.

“Ten! Nine! Eight…”

When the countdown began, he cupped her cheeks in his hands.

“Gotta get us into position,” he joked.

“Seven! Six! Five…”

Gia slipped her hands along his chest, placing her palm flat over his heart. Xander’s eyes went dark with desire.

“Four! Three! Two…”

Xander’s lips were on hers before the crowd reached, “One!”

Gia had never dreamed she’d be kissed with such overwhelming passion. Hell, she didn’t even know kisses like this existed, but as Xander’s lips claimed hers, she lost all sense of time and place, wishing with all her heart the two of them could remain here forever…just like this.

When Xander released her, he pressed his forehead to hers. “Happy New Year, Princess.”

She smiled, pushing up on her tiptoes. “Happy New Year, Daddy,” she whispered, her lips brushing against his cheek.

Time moved more quickly after that as the guests at the wedding formed two lines, holding up sparklers knight-style as Gus and Alison walked underneath, waving and saying goodbye before climbing into the limo Xander had gotten for the couple. Tonight, it would take them to the nicest hotel in Maris, then tomorrow, they were heading to a romantic cabin on a nearby lake for their honeymoon.

“Ready to go?” Xander asked, leading her to the parking lot and his car.
