“And what?”

I squinched my eyes. “And what did he want, Grandpa?”

He looked from me to Grams and back again, rubbing the back of his neck, noticing I didn’t call himPops.

“I can’t believe it.” I smacked my forehead. “I totally thought he was just some random guy hanging out drinking wine. Not the new owner next door!”

“Well, you sure put a kink in things,” he said.

“Don’t worry, Pop. I’ll fix it.”

“Before dinner?” His eyebrows were raised in consideration.

“What do you meanbefore dinner?”

He shrugged, absentmindedly walking to the sink, “I invited him to dinner.”

“Oh. My. God. You didn’t!”

“I sure did.” He laughed as he washed his hands.

“Are you shitting me, Pops?”

He turned his head. “No, ma’am.”

“What the hell?”

“Well now, don’t you worry your pretty little face.” He pinched my cheek. “Turns out he wasn’t able to make it after all. Said he still has a lot of work to catch up on.”

“Oh, you!” I poked him in the ribs. My body sighed with relief.

“But it is good to know what kind of reaction a man can still get out of you.” He roared with laughter at my expense again. Typical Pops. He looked at Grams. “Oh, Sophia, you should have seen them. All flustered with each other.”

“Pops! No, I wasn’t. No, we weren’t,” I admonished him. He waggled his eyebrows again. “Now don’t you start with that crap,” I warned.

“What? Who? Me?” He pointed to himself, feigning complete innocence.

“Yes, you.” I nudged him again in his ribcage.

“Ooh, that one hurt a bit.” He rubbed his side. “Well, you’re going to have to fix your hullabaloo at some point. He’s our neighbor now. And we’re going to be doing some business with him.”

“What do you mean?” Grams and I asked simultaneously.

“He wants to purchase some of our land.”

“What!”

Pops covered his ears. “He wants to buy the area closest to his.”

“Why?!”

“Because he wants more land. He made an offer on the winery, but I told him we weren’t interested.”

“I knew it! Iknewit!” I slapped my hands on the countertop.

Grams chimed in, “Calm down, Siena. Let’s hear all of it before you blow a gasket.”

“Fine,” I huffed, leaning over, feeling like the wind was knocked out of me. I turned around and leaned against the counter. “He’s an evil man, I’m telling you.” I shook my finger at him and squinted my eyes in distrust while waiting for Pops to finish his story.
