“I guess youdohave a point,” I agreed, knowing I was the same way regarding my family and friends.

“I was hoping we could call a truce. Put it all behind us.” He cocked his head to the side. “Start over?”

Jenny nudged me. I could telepathically hear her screamingSay YES!

I sighed, knowing when to admit defeat. “Okay.”

He cleared his throat and straightened his shoulders. “Hi, I’m Michael Aiden Blaire.” He held out his hand, beaming a megawatt smile.

“Seriously? Why you gotta be all fancy?” I harassed.

“Because that’s my full name. Even my business cards say so.”

I laughed, extending my hand. “Nice to meet you, Michael Aiden Blaire. I’m Siena Giuliana Moretti.” I flared my best Italian.

“Beautiful name for a beautiful woman.”

“Knock it down a few notches, Romeo,” I teased, subconsciously willing him to keep going.

He laughed. A deep, rich, beautiful laugh. And that smile.A total panty-dropper, I could hear Jenny say through our unspoken looks.

“All righty then. Our truce is agreed upon.”

“You got it,” I agreed.

He smiled as he turned and walked away. He’d only taken a few steps when he turned back. “Ms. Moretti?” he crooned.

“Yeah?” My cheeks heated again at the way he said my name.

He sauntered back over, leaned seductively onto the counter, and said in a low, come-hither voice, “I think I might have something you want.”

The hairs on the back of my neck broke out. “You do?”

He didn’t break eye contact. “I do.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat, heat rising in all the best parts of my body.

“Your keys.” He slid them to me with an utterly arrogant smile plastered on his perfectly chiseled face.

I cleared my throat, trying to form the words to answer. “Oh, right. Um, thanks.” I smiled sweetly and shoved them into my pocket.

“Any time, Siena.” He winked and walked away.

I swear I could hear him whistling as he left.

Damn fate to hell.

4:22 a.m. Saturday, and I was wide awake. I didn’t even need the alarm I had set in the off chance I didn’t wake up from the heavy consumption of wine the night before. Pops had kept pouring, and I had kept taking. I had been in a mood, that was for sure. Despite my attempt to drink away the memories, Michael’s chocolate-brown eyes and perfect smile kept flashing through my dreams.

I couldn’t escape him.

He was tormenting me.

While Michael and I had called a truce, I still didn’t fully trust him. How was I supposed to when I felt he had ulterior motives? I couldn’t let my guard down or let him in yet. I had to play the defense for now. Keep my friends close and my enemies closer. And while Michael might not realize it, right now, he was the enemy.

The fog of my dreams disturbed me and heightened my anxiety. My heart was beating erratically, and I felt tight all over. I couldn’t sleep, and I had nothing to do for the next few hours. So, I did what any sane person would do. I went downstairs, started a pot of coffee, and proceeded to stare at the walls.
