“Just trying to be neighborly.” I turned up my smile, flashing my pearly whites, knowing very few women could resist it.

She lifted her chin and arched a perfectly shaped eyebrow. “Uh-huh.”

“I am.”

She scoffed, resting a hand on her hip. “Doubtful. Something’s up.”

“Nothing’s up.”Other than my cock a minute ago. I held my hands up in surrender. “I saw you outside and decided I might as well join you.” I didn’t add that her voluptuous backside had me running out the door just to follow her. That I wanted to see up close and personal what that perfectly plump rump of hers looked like. To watch it shake and rise, bounce with every step she took while jogging.

“Well, that’s too bad.” She smirked. “I’m just about done.” She looked at her nails, one of those classic things women do when they’re trying to brush you off.

“It’s okay. I’ll just pick up where you leave off.” I wasn’t about to let her get off that easily.Come to think of it. . . I chuckled at my own joke.

“What’s so funny?”

“Nothing,” I lied. “Just thinking about how kismet this is.”

“Kismet?”

“Yeah, you know . . . Destiny?”

She rolled her eyes. “I know whatkismetmeans, dummy. How isyouchasing aftermeduring my morning run destiny?”

“I saw you out my window. That part is kismet. Me running after you? Well, that’s just me being sociable.”

“Uh-huh.” A tiny chuckle escaped her.

Thank god. I had to keep her talking. Get her to see me for the person I am, not the douchebag she thought I was. “What were you doing?”

“Just looking.”

I quirked an eyebrow, hopeful. “For me?” I forced my laugh, so she’d know I was flirting, as was in my good nature. I was joking . . . teasing . . . trying to make her laugh. But part of me hoped she had been looking for me.

“Don’t flatter yourself, Blaire. I was looking at the property.” She shooed me off, adding, “I wasnotlooking foryou.”

I didn’t believe her. Maybe it was my own egotism. Then again, maybe she was telling the truth. “Well, what’d you think?”

“About what?”

“Duh.” I rolled my eyes in jest. “About the property.”

“Duh,” she returned with a smile. “That it burned down.”

“That’s it?”

“That. And how sad it is there’s nothing left of what used to be.” The hurt in her voice got to me.

“Well, technically”—I tried to sound upbeat—“there are still a few beams that didn’t totally get scorched.”

She looked away in the direction of the old property. I could feel the sadness emanating from her.

I didn’t know what was happening or what to do. So, I did the only thing that felt natural. I reached out and laid my hand on her shoulder. “Hey, what’s wrong?”

Her eyes were brimming with tears. “Oh. God. This is just stupid.” She pressed her eyes with her fingers, wiping her tears. “Ugh. You wouldn’t understand.”

“I can be a very understanding person.”

She scoffed as her head shot up. “Yeah, right.”
