I laughed at her words, how she contradicted herself. “Which one is it? Yeah or no?”

Her lips fought to suppress a smile. “No,” she said, but the corners of her mouth said otherwise.

“You’re lying. Of course, it did. I’ve already learned that much about you, darlin’. But we’ve already made a truce. Let’s not fuck it up again by arguing.”

She raised her hands in agreement. “All right.” Her quick acquiescence surprised me.

I quickly regrouped. “Good. Because you and me? We agreed to start over. We’re gonna be friends, the two of us.”

“Seriously, what kind of person doesn’t like brownies?” she asked me. “A crazy person,” she answered herself, twirling her hand next to her head with her finger extended. “Cuckoo, cuckoo,” she added, imitating a bird.

I chuckled, rolling my eyes. “Well, I promise you I’m not crazy.”

“Yeah, right,” she scoffed, tucking a flyaway hair behind her ear, “that’s what all the crazies say.”

This chick cracked me up, ticked me off, made me smile, made me cringe. One minute I wanted to smother her with a pillow, the next, I wanted to smother her with kisses. Everywhere.

Her skin glowed in the moonlight. My god, she was fucking lovely.

“Hey? Where’d you go?” Her velvety-sweet voice brought me out of my reverie.

“Huh? Oh, sorry. What were you saying?”

“That you’re crazy.”

My Cheshire-cat grin widened across my face. “Right.” I was so mesmerized by her I didn’t have a wiseass comeback.

“Well, I guess I’ll just take those from you.”

I held them out, close enough that she’d have to take a step forward. A mouse lured to the trap with the promise of a tasty treat if she’d just take one teeny, tiny step.

She took it. And then I grabbed her by the waist and pulled her into me. Damn, she smelled good. “I think we should stop fighting this thing between us.” I looked down at her, waiting. Begging silently for her to reply. I lowered my head, ready to get a taste.

“Siena?” her grandmother called out for her from the house.

Impeccable timing.

She blinked, looking into my eyes. “Yeah?” she called, not for a moment breaking eye contact. Our lips were almost touching.

“You coming back inside soon?” Sophia asked.

I knew she couldn’t see us, but suddenly I felt like a teenager trying to sneak my girl into the house without my parents finding out.

“Yeah,” she answered. She smiled guiltily and immediately broke out of my hold. I heard her giggle as she pulled my hand and dragged me with her.

“What are you doing?” I groaned, linking my free hand with hers.

“You wanted to bring our stuff back. Well, you’re bringing it back.”

I squeezed her hand. “We’re not through with this yet.”

“Yeah, yeah,” she sniggered.

“Now who’s being insufferable?” I taunted.

She snorted. “Now you know how it feels.”

“Did you just snort?”
