“Yes, fine. What the fuck? Why are you stalling?” She was breathless, on edge, waiting for me to regale them with all the dirty details.

“Thanks,” I laughed at her outburst. “I just had to get that out of the way. Shit kind of hit the fan. But it seems we cleared things up before he left.”

“Ugh. Quit jibber-jabbering!” Lauren squealed.

“So, he asked me to walk him out when he left and hot damn!”

I took them through everything, not leaving out one single detail. They were my best friends, and they deserved the best rendition of tonight’s main event.

I sat on top of my bed, holding my pillow and twirling my hair, feeling like a giddy teenager. It reminded me of when we used to have slumber parties and would talk about the boys we had crushes on. “He is the perfect kisser. Omigod, that mouth. Fuck me!” I swooned. “And now, it appears, we’re going to San Francisco together.”

“What?” they all shrieked through the line.

“I know! Right?” I filled them in about his friend. “I don’t know how much I believe him that this just worked out perfectly, timing-wise. It all seems a bit too coincidental to me.”

“Who cares!” Lauren said! “You’re gonna get laid! You’re gonna get laid!”

Audrey and Jenny joined in with her teasing.

“Shut up!” I started giggling again, feeling like I did when I lost my virginity. I had been the last one of our group to lose my V-card.

The girls started talking over each other in excitement and anticipation. “Where are you gonna do it? Where are you staying? Oh, hopefully he books the penthouse or some fancy suite! What are you gonna wear? Don’t forget to wax!”

A trio of laughter broke through on the last one.

“I’ll book you an appointment with my girl,” Audrey said.

I groaned. “Fine. I don’t know where we’re staying, but he said he’d take care of all the details.”

“Ooh-wee,” Lauren whistled.

“But he did say he’d get us separate rooms.”

“What the hell? Why?” Jenny asked.

I laughed. “Pretty sure it had something to do with the fact my grandparents were sitting right there. That and the fact I hadn’t thrown myself at him yet.”

“Right. Right,” she said. I could tell she was trying to figure out if that was the reason behind Michael’s decision.

“That’s just semantics. Don’t you worry your pretty face,” Audrey chimed in. “You’re gonna get laid,” she sang again.

“What about Tim?” Lauren asked.

My heart sank. “Ugh!” I buried my head in my pillow. “I forgot about him. Not really forgot. But you know . . . just forgot. Shit.” I said. “Shit! Shit! Shit! I don’t know how that major detail slipped my mind.” Perhaps it was Michael’s thumbs scraping over my nipples.

“He’snotthe major detail of this trip,” Jenny chastised.

“Yeah, the major detail is Mr. Fuck-Me-Hard.” Audrey’s bark of laughter filled the line.

“He’s thesecondmajor detail. The priority detail is the interviews,” Jenny said. “Focus on those. Then you can focus on Mr. Fuck-Me-Hard.” She snort laughed.

“I agree with them,” Lauren said. “Tim is a tertiary focus.”

I rolled my eyes heavenward. “I wish I didn’t have to deal with him at all.”

“I know,” Lauren said. “But you need to get your money back. Then you can move on to the next chapter of your life free from drama and your shitty ex.”

She was right. They all were. And I knew they understood all the frustrating pieces I was trying to deal with. With Michael on my brain, and on my lips, and fighting with him about his stupid hotel, I’d managed to put this Tim crap out of my mind, even if for only a moment.
