“You sure nothing else is going on?”

She hesitated again. “With me? Nope. Nothing I can think of. Just work, work, work.” Her words came out hurried.

I wasn’t buying it. “You’re sure?”

“Yep.”She was lying!

Audrey was hiding something, although I wasn’t sure what it was. Or what it could be about. Clearly, she didn’t want to talk about it right now. I promised myself that I’d talk with her when I got back and make sure she knew I had her back just as much as she had mine. Everything lately seemed to be revolving around me and my messed-up life. I didn’t want to be the kind of friend who got all the attention and support but didn’t reciprocate when it was needed in return. My friendships with Audrey, Jenny, and Lauren were everything to me. They were my lifeline. Without them, I’d be completely and utterly lost. “Thanks, Aud. For everything.”

“Shit, I didn’t do anything.”

“You listened. And you said everything that I needed to hear.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Audrey wasn’t a big softy and hated any display of emotions. She hated seeming weak, even if it was warranted. “So, you good?”

“Not good. But better. At least I’m not crying anymore, right? I’ll be okay. I just need to face the facts and realize I wasn’t meant to end up with him. I pretty much realized that the first go around. Now I just need to accept it for what it is and put it behind me. Thankfully, I got my money back.”

“’Atta girl! Now, what you need to do is freshen up and have a few drinks. Where’s Michael? Have him take you out. He’ll make you forget all about lame ole what’s his name.”

“Oh shit! I forgot I was supposed to call him on my way back.”

“Well, text him when you get off, you know, the phone with me. Wink, wink.” A snort of laughter escaped her.

“Oh my god.” I smacked my forehead at her too obvious of a joke.

“Just tell him to meet up with you at the bar. Have some drinks, flirt with that hot piece of ass. And get yourself back in the game.”

“Oh god,” I groaned.

“Better yet, get your ass in his bed and revenge fuck the shit out of him.”

I groaned again at her apparent sex on the brain.

“What? You know he wants you. And you definitely can’t deny that you want him.” I didn’t respond, so she jumped right back in. “Can you? Can you seriously say to me—straight-faced, dead in the eye—that you don’t want to bang his brains out?”

“You are so crude. And, PS, you can’t see my face. We’re on the phone!”

“I may be crude, but how often have you seen me down and out over a guy?”

“Not since the tenth grade.”

“Bobby fucking Fletcher. That asshole.”

“Sounds like someone’s still holding a grudge.” Oh, high school.

“Not me. That fucker can kiss my pretty, perky, perfect sweet ass.”

“Uh-huh. Sure. Liar.”

“Am not.”

“Whatever you say, sweetie.”

“Shut up. Go fix your face and bang a headboard.” I could hear Audrey banging on something in the salon, exaggerating the sounds of sex.

“Get your mind out of the gutter, perv.”

“I may be a perv, but I have mind-blowing sex. Can you say the same?” She was laughing, and I couldn’t help but join in.
