Only ten minutes had passed before she downed her second glass of wine and asked for another.

“Okay, someone’s a little thirsty,” I said as she took a large gulp.

“I’m in the mood to celebrate. Aren’t you?” Her eyes twinkled with the rheum of intoxication from the sangiovese. She giggled.

“And what, pray tell, are we celebrating?”

“I don’t know.” She giggled again. “A successful day, I suppose. Two great interviews. Closure”—she peered at me with one eye—“friendship?” She smirked. I didn’t know how sarcastic she was being.

Just go with it,I told myself. “Those are all good things.” I pushed a bowl of bar mix to her. She needed to eat something.

She grabbed a handful and started munching away, a little chipmunk who’d found her hoard of nuts.

I grabbed another bowl a few seats down and slyly slid it toward her. I grabbed a handful too, not touching my third drink.

While Siena was distracted with her snacks, I closed our tab. I grabbed her hand and gently pulled her with me. She was tipsy already, and I didn’t want her completely drunk or incapacitated. Not tonight.

“I like you, Michael, you know that?” she admitted, a slight titter in her words.

“I like you too, Siena.” I looked at her, captivated by the way she moved in those heels, that dress.

We rode the elevator up to our floor, neither of us saying a word. I held her hand. She gave me her keycard, and I slid it into the slot, unlocking the door.

“You’re coming in, right?”

Fuck yes, I was. There was no way I’d be able to sleep tonight without touching her. I nodded and let her pull me into the room.

She left me in the entryway and plucked off her shoes, letting them drop to the floor. I tossed my jacket onto a nearby table. Undid my tie, tossed it onto my jacket. Not for a moment did I let my eyes slip from her luscious form.

I opened the patio door, letting in the cool night air. We needed to breathe. She grabbed a bottle of water on her way and followed me out onto the balcony.

“I fucking love this city.”

“It’s a good city,” I agreed, popping a couple of buttons free from my shirt, then from my wrists.

“It’s agreatcity.” She raised the bottle to her lips and took two huge sips.

“You think this is great? Nah. New York. Nowthat’sa great city.”

“Haven’t been there much. But it’s definitely a close second.”

I laughed. “I’ll take you there sometime.”What? Where the fuck had that come from.

“Hmm,” she wondered. “Maybe.” Her smile let me know that my offer wasn’t completely off the table.

“How you feeling?” I came closer and wrapped my arm around her.

“A-okay.”

“Good.” I was rubbing circles against her back. She leaned into me and sighed. I kissed her head, enjoying her smell and the warmth of her body.

She shivered against me. “Cold?”

“A little.” She snuggled into me.

I took her hand, kissed it, and led her back inside where it was warm. I didn’t want this night to end. In fact, I had a completely different idea of how things were going to go tonight. But I didn’t want to take advantage of her if she was drunk.

I was an idiot frozen in confusion, trying to figure out what my next step should be. One part of me told me to leave and let her get some sleep. Another part reminded me I wouldn’t be able to sleep unless I made her body mine.
