Gritting her teeth, Tess hissed in a breath. “You think if you turn me on enough, I’ll forget my question?”

One side of his mouth sloped up, and he winked, still fixated on the TV.

Boosting her hands from his knees, she fell forward to grab his shoulders. “I’ll suck it,” she purred, holding her lips just away from his.

His finger slithered south to push into her. Try as she might to ignore his tormenting, her hips moved like his brain was the one in control of her body.

He tipped his head back to gulp down the last of the beer, then slammed the bottle onto the shelf behind the chairs.

“Got a better idea.”

Wrapping both arms around her, he put the chair down, dropped to his knees, and laid her on the floor. He didn’t even bother to ask. He just pushed up her skirt, yanked his pants down, and sank himself into her.

Tess wanted an answer to her question for about as long as she remembered she had one. Sliding her hands up and down his body, she gave herself to him and appreciated what he gave her. She didn’t even realize anything was different until in the scorching midst of her orgasm, Danny rose higher and released a long feral call of what could only be described as rage.

The depth of that primal exclamation stalled her own pleasure. When she looked up at him, he wasn’t looking at her. Judging by the fierce scowl on his face, his mind was somewhere else completely. His mouth only closed for a fraction of a second after his shout silenced. Just as quickly as it came, it became a curse. He shoved off the floor to stalk up the trailer.

Confused, she rose to her elbows. Tess had never been so with it after sex with him, but he’d never been so expressive. Ever. Literally ever, in all the time she’d known him. Something could be wrong. Had she broken him?

Pushing her dress down, she clambered to her feet. “Danny,” she called after him.

The moment she passed the restroom door, he shoved it open, blocking the hallway. Instead of reassuring her or laughing off his odd behavior, he grabbed her wrist and stepped forward, forcing her backwards. He raised her arm to slam it against the frame of the shower.

“Is that good?” he barked.

Danny didn’t bark. He never got angry. Yeah, sometimes there was the odd grumpy word but never fury.

“Wh… what?”

He pointed at the scar on her arm. “The implant. You’ve got the implant, right?”

Her jaw moved, though it took her a few seconds to figure out why he was asking. “Oh my God, we didn’t use a condom.” His grip on her wrist tightened, which was enough to remind her of his question. “Yes! It’s good. Less than a year old.”

He breathed out. “Okay.”

His scowl relaxed as the rest of his muscles did; relief washed over him. His fingers loosened from around her wrist, and he closed his eyes.

Just as she’d thought earlier, before her date, they’d never promised themselves to each other. Although she was pretty sure he hadn’t been with another woman in the last week while they’d been living together, that didn’t mean he was clean as a whistle.

Rather than question him about his sexual history, Tess decided it would be a good idea to get herself to a clinic as soon as possible.

“I did buy more,” she said, watching him run a weary hand through his hair. “They’re in my purse.”

“I’ll get a whole bunch tomorrow,” he said, walking away from her to open the fridge. “Put ‘em everywhere. We can’t let that happen again.”

“No,” she said, taking the beer he offered.

He held his toward hers, she raised it up to touch the bottles to each other. Like that gesture was enough to erase the moment, he left her there by the shower to go back to his recliner.

That was his happy place. The place he sat when he wanted to relax and just be Danny. A happy place seemed like a damn fine prospect. Tess had been nowhere that could…

“The glitter,” she whispered. Something from the letter came back to her. “The glitter… you know our code.”

It was so obvious she wanted to kick her own ass. Striding Danny’s way, she put the beer on the counter by the sink.

“Can you get me a vehicle?” His mouth was on the lip of the beer bottle, but he tipped his eyes her way. “You and the guys fix up cars here, right?”

Propping his beer on the arm of his chair, Danny moved to get more comfortable. “My truck’s good enough to pull this hunk of junk. You can take that. When’ll you be back?”
