FOURTEEN

“I GOT IT. I KNOW WHAT I’m doing,” Tess said, trying to figure out the fold in the map.

They stopped at six different gas stations just to find one. Everywhere tried to sell her a GPS thingy. No one seemed to understand that a good old-fashioned map was just as good.

“You’ve got a helluva stubborn streak, babe,” Danny said, ejecting the tape to flip it over and push it back in. “What do you say we sack the big drama mission for a while? Plenty of beauty spots to park up the Beast.” As they’d taken to calling the Airstream. “We’ll do a supply run first, get some good green, snacks, beer… plenty of beer. The essentials, you know? We kick back in the middle of nowhere. Nothing but green trees and blue sky for miles. I know some real good middle of nowhere spots.”

“I’m sure you do, honey,” she said, frowning at the map, trying to figure out exactly where they were.

“That thing’s probably out of date,” he said. “Check what year it was printed.”

Tess was having enough trouble trying to find the right road; she didn’t want to waste time looking for printing details. “It’ll be here. The building is old, the twenties, I think… maybe the fifties.”

He laughed. “Not much difference there.” Jerking her hands toward each other, she showed him a glare before snapping the map open again to return to her searching. “So we stock up for a few days… few weeks maybe. Buy a shit ton of rubbers. We go skinny-dipping, count stars. Just you, me, and nature… We sleep all day, fuck all night… Can’t think of anything better, can you?”

“Sounds perfect,” she said, lowering the map to scan outside, seeking landmarks.

“So we’re going?”

“After my big drama mission… and after we’ve fixed things with your dad.”

Danny groaned. “Shouldn’t have opened my mouth. Forget the old man.”

“No,” Tess said, glancing back and forth between the map and the streets they were driving through. “I’m glad you told me. I want to help.”

“We don’t need any help,” he said.

It had been four days since he’d told her about his father issues. Tess didn’t bring it up often, just enough to let him know she hadn’t forgotten.

They were in the Rotunda building’s vicinity; the only place mother and daughter had visited more than once. Anne’s happy place. At the time, she had thought little about why her mom dubbed it that. Whether they were bowling, or she was rolling around in ball pools, it was an exciting place for a child.

But the glitter.

It had to be; she had to be right.

“You’ve got a great incentive now,” she said, close to figuring out where they were.

“Incentive?”

“Sure,” she said. “You have to fix things with your dad before we can lose ourselves in nowhere. You’ll patch things up much faster if you know a mountain of weed and unlimited pussy is on the other side of the finish line.”

“I have unlimited pussy now,” he muttered. “I can buy weed anywhere.”

“You’ll have peace of mind when you fix things with him—left! Left! Go left!”

At the last second, he took the turn, going faster than he should while hauling a trailer. Horns blared from at least three different directions. Once they were on the straight again, he turned his frown to her. Wearing a broad smile, Tess kissed her fingertips, then touched them to his lips.

He drew his attention around to the windshield again. “She sucks your cock, Danny,” he murmured. “She’s hot and sucks your cock.”

“What are you doing?”

“Reminding myself.”

Of reasons not to yell or throttle her? Probably best not to comment on his private discussion, so she reassured him instead.

“It’s good,” she said. “I know where we are now… I think.”

“Love the confidence, babe.”
