Danny broke the kiss. “We’re good.”

“Mm hmm,” she said, clutching the back of his neck in both hands to pull him down for a deeper kiss.

His mouth needed more attention. Deserved more. She wasn’t done. Talk about a white knight. Everything he’d done overwhelmed her. He couldn’t know how close she’d come to admitting defeat. At the last second, he’d snatched it back for her.

Wearing a smile as he withdrew, he had to hold her head to ease her mouth away from his. Though she managed to steal another couple of shorter kisses before he laughed.

“Grateful, Little Red?”

“There’s a bed in the parking lot,” she said, still trying to capture his mouth. “I know a guy.”

“Sure you do,” he said, straightening up, which immediately ended her hope of stealing more kisses. “I’ve got a better idea.”

“Better than sex? Are you coming down with something? What have you done with my Danny?” she asked, but was intrigued. “What idea?”

His little finger twined with hers. “Know how to roller-skate?”

SIXTEEN

“THIS IS A BAD IDEA,” Tess said as Danny took her hands to guide her onto the roller rink.

Her skates rolled on the slick surface, sending her into a panic. She braced to go down, but Danny yanked her to him, adjusting his own stance to catch their balance. Somehow, he kept them upright.

Peeking up at him, she gripped him tight, unwilling to let go.

“I can’t believe you never learned to skate,” he said. “It’s like ice-skating, you ever do that?”

Shaking her head, she clung on as he used his strength to pry her nails from his tee-shirt. “Don’t let me go!”

“I’m not going anywhere,” he said. Relinquishing the fabric, her hands leaped to his biceps. “Open your legs.” When her eyes pounced to his, a laugh quickly followed his order. “Okay, yeah, I usually do that for you, but we don’t need them that wide.”

“Please don’t flirt with me,” she said, gripping tighter as he moved backwards, his hands on her ribs under her arms. “I come all this way to get a letter and then I die before I get a chance to read it.”

“Nobody died from roller-skating,” he said, scooping her aside when a gang of teenagers sprinted by. “Even the kids can do it.”

“Yeah, okay, we’ve established I’m lacking,” she said, scowling at him. “I told you, I have no rhythm.”

“That’s what you say, I still don’t believe it,” he said. “Look, it’s easy. Balance, remember? We did that on the carpet.”

“Yeah, on carpet it’s easy.”

Danny stopped them. They were out of the way of the rink entrance, but further away from the side than she’d like.

“Okay…” he said, bending his knees to take hold of her hips. “Heels together, remember? You won’t go anywhere.”

“Easy for you to say,” she muttered, holding his arms as she adjusted her stance.

“Now all you’ve gotta do is shift your weight from one side to the other.” Obviously, her expression didn’t inspire confidence because he flashed his dimples on a laugh. “Okay.” When he moved like he intended to let her go, she fired a bunch of short, desperate sounds his way. “It’s okay, baby. I’m just going around the back.” Her hands relaxed, though Tess didn’t actually break contact as he rolled around to stand behind her. “Just like in bed when I flip you over.”

“You warn me before you do that,” she said, clutching his forearms, trying to pull them around her.

“Not with words,” he said, squeezing her hips. “You can tell by the way I look at you.”

“Yeah.”

Prying her hands from his arms, he guided her into position. “Because we’ve been doing the dirty a while, you get to know who you’re playing with.”

“Uh huh,” she said, noting how he angled one of her palms down and then the other. “Danny.”
