The RV park really was right on the beach. A couple of dozen other trailers and RVs were lined up with them, flanking the central road. The facilities weren’t anything fancy, but it had everything they needed. Just like Danny promised.

More than a week had gone by since the Rotunda mess. She’d never been happier with any decision. Danny and the beach were quite the combination and the perfect medicines for her ails.

“Beach suits you, babe,” he said, sliding down the chair to work on her lower back, which seemed to include the top of her ass. “How you feel about South America?”

Tess adjusted the position of her cheek on her folded hands. “South America?”

“Sure, we can tour the coast. Just keep on driving. Stop when we like, start whenever we want.”

“I don’t have a passport, and what about your dad?” she asked, having brought up the second part of their mission several times that week. “When are we going to see him?”

“There’s a cool seafood restaurant not far away. We could walk… get drunk, screw on the beach… again. Wanna go out to eat?”

Raising her upper body, Tess reached around to tie her bikini and righted it over her chest as she turned over. “Danny—”

“Want me to do the front now?”

His glow of optimism was just another diversion. She sat up to stall his hands before he could pour lotion into them.

“I’d give anything to have my mom around to argue with. How bad can it be? I promise I won’t let him hurt you.”

His lips quirked. “Oh, I’d love to see that, Little Red.”

“Then let’s go,” she said, gripping his wrist.

He leaned closer. “I don’t trust him.”

“Okay,” she said, using her hold on him to pull herself closer. “Least we know what the problem is. You’re the one who always says nothing’s too broken to fix.”

“I don’t want to fix it,” he said. Angling her head, Tess wasn’t so sure, and tipped her chin closer. “Don’t do the doe eyes. I’m not gonna change my mind just ‘cause you do the doe eyes.”

She licked her lips. “How about if I promise blowjobs every day for a month?”

His eyes moved as his brows rose, suggesting that offer was attractive enough to consider. But he quickly groaned and took his wrist from her grip.

“I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it anywhere near that asshole.” He lunged forward to steal a kiss, then stood up. “Come inside when you’re ready to eat. The restaurant takes walk-ins. I checked.”

He disappeared around the end of the trailer, heading for the door on the other side, she guessed.

No matter what Tess said, he wouldn’t be moved on the issue of going to see his father. It wasn’t her place to push. Not that Danny would ever get mad at her. Maybe that was why she kept prodding at him. If he showed a real emotional aversion to visiting his father, she might understand and back off. But he never did. As easy about the rift as he was about everything, his indifference was puzzling.

The guy was his father.

Yeah, maybe it should be the patriarch’s responsibility to make the first move. But with Danny traveling all the time, it would be easy to lose touch. If his dad wanted to patch things up, he’d have to first locate his son. Not an easy task.

The sea was so beautiful, she could look out at the great chasm of blue nothingness for hours. Except she’d been out in the heat for too long.

Bending forward, she retrieved her empty glass and notepad from under the chair. Sitting up, she laid the pad on her thighs and looked out at the ocean again. If only life could be as simple. The ocean was a good metaphor for life. No matter how simple things appeared on the surface, there was a whole cutthroat world lingering just beneath.

“Do you mind?”

The male voice drew her attention. An older gentleman, who she recognized from the trailer next to theirs, stood just behind her.

“Excuse me?”

He nodded toward her lap while waving a black handheld device.

“My grandson got this thing for me and I’ve never used the converter.”
