“But you weren’t missing much,” Daire said, gesturing back at her without turning. “Just ask the temptress, her life wasn’t one of love and luxury.”

“I want both of you to be happy.”

“Well then, you were right, you let everybody down.”

Tess didn’t want to hear more arguing. Though part of her wanted to know every detail of what the men were discussing, another part was aware of where they were and how far it was from safety… if there was such a thing.

She stepped forward. “Do you have a truck? A vehicle?”

H glanced from her to Daire and back again. “No. I hitched in and cut through the Glade.”

Where was that? Was it a shortcut to a main road?

“Harry doesn’t leave tracks,” Daire said. “Not in the Olympusphere.” Being clueless was becoming familiar. Daire put a hand in his pocket and tossed something her way. “Take the Beast.”

She caught the keys. “I don’t—”

“She’s never hauled a trailer,” he said to H. “Don’t let her tell you she can do it. She’ll kill both of you trying.”

Daire started in her direction. The way he walked was different. His stance was straighter, more formidable, and his shoulders were broader somehow. It was insane, but the transformation was jarring. Even his eyes and hair seemed darker. How was that possible? The mean air around him was the opposite of the warm, easy glow her Danny exuded.

Standing there, in his path, Tess expected to be pushed aside.

“Daire, you can’t play rogue, you suck at it.” Harry stopped Daire before he reached her. “You don’t do lone wolf either. You need to fight for something, son. Always have.”

“Harry,” Daire said, warning heavy in the word.

“I let you go because I respected what I thought was your choice. Hierarchy stands. If Z doesn’t have your loyalty, you still answer to me.”

“Could be bullshitting you,” Daire said. “Maybe I am working for him.”

“If you were, you had all you needed to draw me out when you located my Light. I’d be dead by now if Z held your leash.”

“What do you want?”

“It’s been almost a year. Z is still out there.”

“He’s taking down our guys.”

“How do you know that?” H asked, though Tess wasn’t sure he didn’t already have his own suspicions.

“It’s the only way to assure loyalty. That’s what happened with your original trainers. Those were Z’s orders too. He’s not sentimental and won’t let it go. He won’t rest until he’s crossed all of us off the list.”

“He needs power,” H said. “I figure he’s going out on his own.”

“Been watching the Six?”

“Two and five are already dead.”

Turning in a slow arc, Daire didn’t seem to expect that. “Two of them means at least eight of ours.”

“Sounds right.”

“Tell me you’ve heard from him.”

“Your brother will be fine,” H said. “You prepared each other well.”

Exhaling a short breath from his nose, Daire’s head fell. “You want us to take them on.”
