She sighed. “So you keep saying.”

Returning to her flicking, Tess didn’t sense Harry’s frustration until he stalked over and grabbed the remote from her hand.

“Pay attention,” he snapped, tossing the remote to the end of the bed. “You stay here, do not leave the room.”

“You said that already.”

“Daire and I will have the keycards. You won’t have to open the door to anyone.”

“Except room service.”

“No,” he said. “Do not order food.”

She sagged. “You expect me to sit here and stare at the walls until you get back? It could be days for all I know.”

“It shouldn’t take more than a few hours. I will come up and check on you if we’re going to be longer.”

“I make no promises,” she said. “We ate hours ago. I might want cake or something. I bet they have good cake.”

“You’re infuriating,” he grumbled.

Tess pasted on a broad smile. “Just warning you in advance to expect the minibar to be empty when you get back. Is there an ice machine on this floor?”

Harry raised his arm to free his watch from under his shirt cuff. “I will get you ice… and food. Stay there.”

He about-faced and marched out of the room, closing the door a little harder than was really necessary. Flipping over, Tess crawled to the end of the bed to get the remote. On her knees, she’d just started flicking again when Daire came out of the bathroom.

“Where’d Harry go?”

“To fetch me food,” she said, turning off the TV and sinking down onto her back, driving her fingers into her hair. “Geez, I’m going out of my mind already.”

Daire came over to stand between the two beds and looked down at her lying in the middle of hers. “I realized today I didn’t apologize.”

“You don’t have to,” she said, springing onto her feet, knowing exactly what he was talking about. “The less we talk about what happened between us, the better.”

The wide window offered a view of the lights and sights of the desert city. Putting her back to him didn’t block him out. When he approached, she could feel him coming, could feel the pull of his gravity.

“I do have to apologize. I didn’t… It shouldn’t have happened.”

“We said that at the time,” she said. “You not being who you said you were doesn’t change that.”

“I should explain. I wish I could…”

The uncertainty of his words brought her around to face him. “You’re an asshole for lying to me. But there were two of us there that night, I didn’t think about it either.”

“I didn’t like seeing you with him… it’s the only excuse I have.”

Her brow lowered. “With who?”

“Your date… In that bar… You were smart to spill the drink.”

“Oh my God,” she breathed. “You were watching us.”

The thought that Danny was in the same position she’d left him in that night was laughable now that she discovered he hadn’t even been in the trailer.

“It was the only way to make sure you were safe,” he said. “You can’t trust any man’s motivation.”

“So Harry said,” Tess said. By now, she should be used to calling herself an idiot. “No way could any man actually want me. All they care about is Olympus, right? I get it.”
