“Two. We need to get you ready for two.”

“I’ll be ready by two-thirty.”

Then she spins around, and I’m shocked about her grabbing her bag and leaving the house.

“Where are you going?”

“Do you really expect me to go to my surprise party like this?”

She’s wearing her blue summer dress, one she often wears around town, because she says that she doesn’t sweat too much in it. It’s made of cotton and has short sleeves and reaches her knees. It’s not the most flattering of dresses but when the temperature hits above forty, which it tends to do around this time of year, the only thing you care about is being comfortable and not so much what you look like.

My eyes trace up and down her dress, I have no idea why, because I’ve seen her wear it so many times before.

“I need to do my hair, get rid of these grays, my nails need to be painted and filed. I can’t have people taking photos of me like this, and I need my makeup to be done right. Not the way you do it, and certainly not the way I put it on at times. I want everything about me to be perfect.”

As she speaks, I forget about her dementia, because it’s as if I have mi abuela back again.

“I’ll come with you,” I say as I remember that I’m not in the house to keep her company, but to make sure she doesn’t leave alone.

She’s backing toward the door. It’s as if no matter what happens, she’s going to leave without me.

“No. And ruin my day after your big fight with Diego. You’ll be in one of those moods. Your face is already all serious. I want to enjoy my make-over.Chao2!” Then she spins around and she’s on her way. I think about what she said. My fight with Diego, she must have heard me tell Cristina about that, but then again I’m sure the whole of Cobeña knows by now. I wasn’t quiet about what he said, it just surprised me, that’s all.

I thought of him being cold and calculative and then acting as if he’s caring and will do anything for me, and then he goes right back to the person I thought he was all the time.

Errh. I hate him. No, I hate me for falling for him.

I need to keep him as far away from me as possible, which isn’t hard, because he’s there and I’m here.

Yet, I end up going back into my room and looking at my phone.

Nothing.

Not one message.

Only Google about the damn politicians.

Yahoo about, guess what? Politics.

And I don’t even need to go on social media to see the same thing.

Mierda!

I’ve got distracted again and I should be thinking about Abuela, not Diego. I shouldn’t have let her go out alone.

I grab my phone and run out onto the street, just in case she hasn’t gone to Maygu. It’s only five minutes walking distance from the house, but if she’s not there, then I’ll have to put out a search party. I can’t have anything happen to her, especiallywhen I did the one thing I said I wouldn’t do: get distracted thinking about Diego.

As I sprint to Maygu, I see Abuela entering and talking to everyone. She’s happy and I move out of sight, so she doesn’t see me. She’s right in a way, I am in a mood. I’ll send a quick message to Teresa, the owner, to let her know I’m at home and if anything happens to abuela then she should call me.

After sending her the message, I have a peek inside, to see Teresea reading her message. She tells me that she will do. I need a cold shower, because I ran a little too quick here and I need to think of something or someone else apart from Diego, starting now. My focus will be on having a good time tonight, so like Abuela I’ll focus on what I’m going to wear and doing my makeup right. The cheap way with loads of YouTube videos. No more do I have two hours to get ready, a little less, but for a girl who usually takes ten minutes to get ready, just under two hours is plenty of time.

Abuela hasn’t had an episode today. I’m not sure why, but it makes me happy to see her in a stunning red dress, and her hair pinned up, something she hasn’t done for in years.

“Sexy Abuela.” I smile. She twirls as she steps out of her room.

She giggles. “A girl always has fun in red. I love everything they did. They even went to get me red earrings to match.”

They really did spoil her.
