“Mi cariño3, I’ll call you later.”

With that he hangs up.

“Do you always do what he says?” I ask his associate with my arms folded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he saved my life. And I will do anything to repay him.”

I’m taken aback by his statement. Maybe staying with Lucas has changed him in some way, but then it seems like Diego has done good in the past.

“Give them to me.”

He hands me an envelope and then takes out a pen. A fountain pen. Something I haven’t seen in years.

“It’s highlighted where you need to sign.”

“Fine.”

I still don’t understand why Belén couldn’t do it. He told me it was in her name, but I did some fake signature, I supposeit has to be the same fake signature used for the marriage certificate. I don’t get how these things work. I bend over with the papers and flick through them, then I sign wherever the Post-it note has my name. And then I jump up and hand it to him.

“It says that a witness is needed.”

He replies, “I am the witness. And your sister settled out of court and has disappeared since then. This is why he needs you to sign it.”

“What’s your name?”

I don’t know what freaks me out more, that if after months of being with his contact and not even knowing his name, or that now he answers questions that Diego has failed to do.

“My name is Daichi Takahashi.”

I nod and smile, then hold out my hand. “Nice to meet you, Daichi Takahashi.”

He shakes my hand, puts the papers in the envelope, and then skips down the stairs and to the car. Running across the street is Alberto. I swear that man never works. He’s always sniffing around, and that night I don’t know if maybe I had too much alcohol or he tried something with me. Either way, I’ve been keeping my distance from him.

“Who was that?” Alberto asks.

“My divorce papers,” I say as I spin around and regret the words that left my mouth. I knew this had to be done, but the idea of me being fake divorced brings about a sadness in me.

“Good, you’re too good for him. He knows your abuela is sick and he hasn’t even come to see you.”

Alberto hasn’t changed, he’s the same prick he was back then but I was too blind to see it. I head to my room, Abuela is with Cristina and I need some time alone to process what Daichi Takahashi said. He said that Belén is missing, and who was that woman screaming for Diego on the phone?

Is she the reason he hasn’t spoken to me in a week?

Maybe the last few weeks have taken everything out of me, because I fall asleep at seven and it looks as if it’s a new day. A wave of panic takes over me as I think about Abuela, so I creep to her room and see she’s in bed and Cristina is on her lounge.

Yeah, it has been emotionally and physically draining because I’ve never slept that many hours and in my clothes too.

I sigh as I head to the kitchen with a rumbling stomach. There are messages on my phone.

Leticia!

Please answer me.

I’m sorry, I didn’t know what to do.
