Imade good use of the hot tub in the bathroom and took my time getting ready, including thinking about what Diego said and ditching my contacts once and for all. The whole bathroom is bigger than the size of the one-bedroom apartment I’ve been living in since I came to New York.

I put a little vanilla essence and soak every piece of my body before having some of the breakfast—or it could have been lunch—room service brought while I bathed.

After that, I put some strawberry shampoo in my hair and then headed to the shower to wash it off. And then I repeated the process again but with different flavors. I know my husband must be angry, annoyed even, that I’ve taken so long. It’s been a couple of hours since he woke me up with a yellow plastic horn that he left on my bed like a child. If he wants to play games, I can too.

I head to the chair where he said my clothes were to change into and I see a red Gucci pantsuit. I try it on, but then for some reason, I get curious to see if there’s anything in the closet, and I’m shocked to see an array of clothes.

Are they all for me?

I try them on too to see which one is best, because they must be as they’re my size. He must have left the Gucci suit on the chair for me to wear, so this means I’m going to choose something else. I tie my dark locks into a bun and head out of the honeymoon suite in a dark green shift dress.

Then as I press the button, and the elevator doors open, there’s a bellhop inside.

I smile at him. “Good morning.”

His dark eyes meet mine. “Good afternoon, ma’am. Did you have a good sleep?”

Odd question.

“Yes, I did.”

“Your husband said you had a little too much on your wedding day and that no one should disturb you because you have a long flight.”

“He’s not downstairs in the lobby?”

He shakes his head. “No. He left hours ago. He said he would be taking the jet to Japan if … when you leave the suite.”

He clears his throat as if he’s about to reword whatever Diego may have said to him.

“That I should call you a taxi, and someone will meet you to take you on your trip.”

“Trip?”

“Yes, he said that he’s getting on the jet, and you’ll take …”

Before he can even finish his last word, the elevator doors open, and I recognize the man on the other side of it.

It’s Raúl, Diego’s head of security. Diego must have instructed him about what to do with me, because everyone seems to know apart from me.

He smiles. “Buenos tardes, Señora Aranda de Hernandez6.”

It would be a good day, if only he hadn’t reminded me of the surname I should be using from now on.

“Buenos. So, you’re taking me to get the jet?”

I step out of the elevator and nod to the bellhop. He gives me a look like he’s wishing me luck. I shake my head and wonder what plans Diego has for me to get to Japan.

He shakes his head as he encourages me to walk with him, “No. To get a taxi and to book your flight.”

“¿Qué?7” I blurt as I ignore everyone’s unwanted attention to hear him repeat what the bellhop just told me. I thought the bellhop was confused, but clearly, he understood Diego’s instructions.

“You have this card. You can use it to pay for the taxi, and I will send you the details of the flight on this phone. We didn’t know what time you would be ready to leave.”

I snatch the iPhone 15 from his hand, remembering that I’m carrying an empty purse with no access to money.

“When’s the next flight to Tokyo?”

“I’m booking the economy flight.”
