“The pillows!¡Joder!4 They’re fine, you don’t have to keep adjusting them.”

“I want to make sure you’re comfortable. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

“There’s everything wrong with it. You just told me that I could have died. Well, I kinda figured it out from you being by my side, and me being in hospital for so long. Do you know how that makes me feel?”

“No,” he whispers. “I just don’t know what I would do if it were you …”

He shakes his head, and even if he hadn’t said that Hana and Yuki died I’m not naive enough to think that something serious wasn’t at stake. I’ve been in hospital for nearly two weeks, unconscious most of the time, part of me is even surprised I’m sitting up thinking about what to do. Because, I’ve had so many vivid dreams of my dog and the past, sometimes I felt as if I was nine again playing with him in the fields.

“You said that they were drinking in the limo and you weren’t?” Diego asks as he stands up and then paces up and done. He looks like a Spanish Sherlock Holmes. As he rubs his chin with his fingers and then halts as he paces as if he has an idea of how to solve the murder investigation.

“So, this means that you were only poisoned in the club and nowhere else. I know that you told all this to the police, but you’re more alert now. I just want to make sure you didn’t forget anything.”

I shrug, thinking I didn’t even remember speaking to the police. My head is trying to trace back to when they came to the room.

“I don’t know where you’re going with all this. When did you become a detective?” I ask, because as much as I’m trying to remember speaking to the police, I don’t remember. It’s making me even more frustrated than normal.

“Leticia, I have to think on my toes when it comes to business decisions. Whoever picked you up from the restaurant knew exactly what they were doing. We’ve been thinking it was a case of Hiroshi trying to lure you in there so he could do whatever he planned to do.”

“Rape me.”

He pauses, turns to face me, and his brows cross. I can tell the idea of it disgusts him.

“I would have … it doesn’t matter.”

I look down, regretting the words coming out of my mouth. I don’t even want to think about it, let alone voice it.

“Someone from the restaurant is involved. I didn’t even think of it. I’ve been looking in the wrong direction.”

“Someone from the restaurant wanted to kill me?”

He shakes his head. “No. Not you but the other ladies. You just got caught up with them. Wrong place, wrong time sort of thing.¡Joder!” he says once again, making me think this is his new favorite word.

“Diego, does all this matter? I mean, they’ve got what they wanted.”

“You’re kidding me. Someone tried to kill you and my business partners’ wives. Of course, it matters. Shit, Leticia, I need to get my contact and then I’ll be back to …”

He starts to move behind me, and I know exactly what he’s about to do.

“Leave the pillows, just go.”

He gazes at me for a split second as if he’s confused. I realize then that him adjusting my pillows is his way to make me feelcomfortable. The man who, only a few days ago had me in his bed and on all fours is now acting as if he’s a stranger to me.

He kisses me on the forehead and then whispers, “You’ve been hurt. I promised myself that I wouldn’t allow it. Everyone involved must pay.”

I close my eyes and my tears sting as he walks out of the door. I don’t know what he’s going to do, because I remember the fire in his eyes as he beat up Hiroshi. Some part of me wondered if he did it just for me, or if he got off my doing it.

I don’t like this side of Diego. The one who wants everyone to suffer for the death of his business partners, or maybe just for trying to hurt me. Either way, I know one thing for sure, vengeance brings pain, this part I’m sure about.

1 Diego, I want to go home.
