“Exactly. As I said, I love my older brother, but not my eldest.”

“I see,” he says as he crosses his leg. “There’s always bad blood between family.”

“God gave us friends to make up for our relatives.”

He laughs at the words I once heard Wayne Dyer speak. I decided to look him up after Leticia mentioned him before this incident. I thought maybe like her, I would find peace listening to wise words.

“You’re mistaken. Hiroshi wasn’t part of the gang, he was the leader.”

I shake my head, not wanting to believe the words that came from his mouth. He nods as his eyes meet mine.

What the fuck?

How did I miss this part?

“I take it that you want a drink? Help yourself. And you can pour me another.” He swings his glass in front of me. I take his glass as I head to the bar.

“Yes, Hiroshi loved fucking other men’s wives. He wanted to be part of the action, and this was how he knew about who to target. Foreigners always make friends with influential people in Japan. They go hand in hand.”

“Now, he’s dead, then the whole operation is dead,” I clarify.

“You of all people should know it’s not that simple. First, as you rightly said, he is dead, but then his mother wants answers.”

“The answer should be that her precious son is a fucking monster who has been put down,” I say as I hand him his glass of whiskey. I finished mine before even leaving the bar.

He shakes his head, not because of my language, but clearly my view on the whole situation isn’t that simple.

“We are in Japan. I don’t know how you do things in Spain, or America. Nor do I really care right now. The police are working with us, to resolve it as quickly as possible. And you must stay in Japan while we clear up the matter, and when it’s all done you can leave.”

I shake my head, confused why I need to stay in Japan. Hiroshi is dead, and his mother wants revenge for her son’s death. They have the police on their side, so they don’t need me.

“What does this have to do with me?”

“Don’t play naive. When this first happened, my father thought you were involved until we found out that Hiroshi was dead at your hand. Let us deal with the matter. When it is all cleared up then you can go home. Is this agreed?”

I nod my head, he doesn’t need to say more than that. Sure, I didn’t shout from the rooftops that I killed Hiroshi, but it is clear he knows and I’m not a good actor, let alone a pretender. I’ll stay until they do whatever they have to do. I’m not going to ask what he means by it all. Maybe they’ll kill his mother, or they’ll do something else.

Ryota and I sit in silence as he sips on the remainder of the whiskey. This one tastes better than the one I have at the hotel suite, which is the same one in the limo. Whoever said that revenge was sweet—I felt it, the moment Hiroshi’s lifeless body was in my hands at the club.

Finally, I’m out of the hospital and able to walk on my own two legs. I’m a bit shaky when I try and walk a little too much, but being out of a bed has put a smile to my face.

I’m sitting on the balcony looking out at the city, so I close my eyes to block out the thoughts which once in a while pop in my head about not being able to breath, see, or feel anything again. There’s so much I want to do with my life, and until I was near death, I didn’t know there could be a chance in which I don’t get to experience any of it. Not one part.
