“Oh?”

“I’m just saying that you don’t need to give up learning the language during the time you’re not here. It doesn’t have to be that way.”

He kisses me on the forehead like Papá would do when I was a child. As we head into the elevator and the doors close, I wrap my arms around him.

“You’re squeezing me tight. Hey, what’s wrong?”

“I’m just worried that this trip was just to learn Japanese and when we get back things will go back to normal. We haven’t even discussed it.”

I look up to see him thinking about it.

“Well, for one, we need to get divorced. You signed the wedding license as Belén—that’s fraud. And then we can take it from there. I don’t see why anything should change. You can move in with me.”

I smack him on the arm, because he knows very well that I have no choice.

“You gave my apartment to Belén. I’m hardly going to move in with her.”

He sighs. “I still don’t get why you married me if you and your sister have an awkward relationship. I wouldn’t do it for Jorge.”

“If he was around …”

Right as I say that, he tenses up and then clears his throat. The elevator door opens and like a bolt of lightning, it all falls into place.

“He’s back!” I say as I point at the back of Diego as he strides out of the elevator.

“This is why you’ve been acting weird, turning off your phone and all that. Your brother is back from the dead.”

He chokes, “Not back from the dead. Just back. We never thought he was dead. Just missing. And now everyone is having a party as if nothing is wrong.”

“So?”

“He clearly wants his position back at the company.”

I still don’t understand the problem.

“Before he ran off. I was COO and he was the CEO, now he’s back there’s a question about whether I should be CEO or not.”

“Abuela wouldn’t do that. She wouldn’t just put him in charge like that. He’s not reliable. That part is clear, he ran off and we won’t let him.” I stomp my feet on the ground and cross my arms.

“You’re kinda sexy when you’re mad,” Diego purrs in my ear. And no more do I feel frustrated about his brother comingback, but I’m wondering if he’s doing it to distract me from the situation.

“Diego, seriously, we’ll miss our flight.”

He’s in front of me, and motioning for me to go back to the elevator.

“Yes, yes, yes,” he mumbles, as he presses the elevator button.

The doors open and then he smiles as it chimes and I can hear the doors sliding closed.

“We’ve never christened this elevator, maybe now we should …”

I don’t even protest, because we’re inside and the moment the doors slam shut, my skirt is up in the air. He’s shadowing me so that no one can see, but it is clear that we’re not having a discussion about what’s going to happen back home. We’re going to have sex.

Diego can’t keep his hands off me and I have nothing to worry about. When we get back home, everything is going to be how it is now, like a honeymoon that never ends.

He presses the button, and by then, I’m already bending down and taking off my panties in anticipation of the moment.

I manage to do it, then he takes my head in one hand and my shoulder in the other. He pulls me in, capturing my lips with his. Heat simmers in my stomach which then starts to boil over, his kisses hungry and fierce. He runs his hands through my hair, pulling me closer as if he can’t get enough of me.
