He yawned. “I understand. Although, if your boss is sending you angry emails, then maybe things aren’t going to calm down soon?”

“No way to tell, really. I hope so. I’m not much of a night owl.”

He smiled. He really liked owls. But that would be a weird thing to say. “I guess I should let you get some sleep then.”

“Yeah, probably. Sorry. I’d rather talk to you.”

This made him feel warm from head to toe. Feeling so warm from a dating app message made him feel extra cheesy. But he still couldn’t stop himself from smiling. “Good night, May. Sweet dreams.”

“You too. Talk to you tomorrow?”

“Sure.” He plugged his phone in and set it down. He rolled over and snuggled up to Sundance, who gave him a confused look. “I know, buddy. I’m not really sure what’s going on either. But look on the bright side, maybe May will have a cute girl for you to get to know.”

Sundance didn’t respond, and Tucker fell asleep wondering what was going on with him and whether he was ever going to recover.

Chapter 23

“Those are differentpeople!” Craig cried as if he were witnessing a crime.

“Well, they arevolunteers,” Wynona said. “Maybe some of them only volunteered for one night. “

“Maybe,” he conceded, but he sounded suspicious.

She parked the van, and he said, “Or maybe they just weren’t as tough as they thought they were and don’t want to spend another night in the dark cold.”

“Yeah, I’m sure that’s it,” Wynona said as she headed for the back of the van. “You are so much tougher than a bunch of seasoned ranch hands.”

Craig came around the back of the van, cussing at her with such venom that she backed up a step.

Martin stepped between them, and she was embarrassed that she needed such a youngster to defend her. “It’s okay, Martin,” she said and hurriedly grabbed her pack. Suddenly, she was in a hurry to get to Tucker.

She started in that direction without her teammates. They could catch up eventually. Or not. She didn’t care.

As she drew closer, it became clearer that Craig had been right. Some of these men were different. She couldn’t blame anyone who hadn’t come back. But she was surprised that Tucker had been able to find new volunteers to replace them. He must have significant sway in the community, which surprised her. He hadn’t struck her as terribly friendly.

Maybe he went to a big church.
