Wynona said, “Maybe we should just announce now that there will be no bow hunting in that area, if that’s what’s going to happen anyway.” It would give hunters time to change their plans.

“Absolutely not ... Are you up for this, Wynona?”

“Yes, of course. You brought me in because I’m ...local, right? I’m trying to think like a local, trying to think of the best way to keep the peace—”

“We’ve learned that it’s best not to commit to something too soon. We don’t know what’s going to happen, so let’s wait and see before making any promises, okay?” Sarah moved on. “We’ve talked to GFP,” she said, referring to South Dakota’s agency. “They say they’re ready to help, but I think some of this might ruffle their feathers, so be prepared for that too.” She handed Wynona a thick folder. “Here’s your plan. You’ll find a map there showing where the hiker took the photo.”

Wynona flipped to the map and then looked up. “The area is huge!”

Sarah nodded. “She can’t remember where she was when she saw the toad. Apparently she hiked for days and took hundreds of photos.”

This wasn’t good news. She had no idea where to start looking. “I wish she’d spotted the pretty toad in the spring.”

“If we don’t find evidence now,” Sarah said, “we’ll look again in the spring.”

Great. Then they’d be messing up turkey season. She had to find this toad. For the toad’s sake, and for the sake of the whole state.

“There’s also a line item in the budget for you to hire a local guide. If you want to.”

Wynona hadn’t thought of that, but it was a good idea.

“And we’ve gotten your team some rooms in Hill City. That info is in there too. You might want to head that way and get some rest. You start Monday. Oh, and there’s a van outside for you.”

Wow. She would have brought more of her things if she’d known more about why she’d been summoned. She’d have to have a friend pack and ship some clothes.

Sarah stood. “Are you good? My daughter has a soccer game.”

Wynona stood too. “Yes, I’m good.” But was she? Sure, as long as she found a nice healthy giant knot of toads out there in dem hills.

“Did Tucker just leavehis phone?” Kash couldn’t believe his good fortune.

“Yeah, why?” Colton eyed him suspiciously.

“Is it password protected?” Kash asked.
