I laughed. With that concern alleviated, I went back to pacing at the top of the wall.

“So, we need to draw out Ty.”

“He wants you,” Hudson pointed out, getting to his feet as well.

“And I’m sure the three of you would be thrilled if I offered myself up as bait.”

In the distance, thunder rumbled, and I looked up to see the skies darkening. The weather this time of year was unpredictable — it could be warm as summer one day and cold as winter the next. Sometimes it seemed to go through all four seasons in one day.

Hudson stared off toward the distant wall of smoke and shadow as if it might provide insights of its own. “From what you said, Ty is dying, so does that mean Andras is weakening?”

“Time is on our side, not his,” I agreed.

“Then Preta might order all of us to stay away from the portal until he dies,” Hudson mused before facing Tempest. “What will happen if Ty dies before Andras has a new host?”

“Devils are greedy,”Tempest answered in her ethereal voice.“He craves a new host, but Ty might last a decade or more yet. They will both suffer until the end.”

Hudson frowned. “And in the meantime, some poor soul might wander too close and offer himself up accidentally.”

“Or purposefully,” I said darkly, thinking of Ty and how he’d ended up a host in the first place. And La Cora, willing to literally sacrifice witches for a vague, indefinite promise of yet more power. I let out a sound of frustration. “I just want to go in there right now and kick his ass.”

Hudson strode up to me, and before I could guess what he was going to do, he crushed me against him for a kiss. His mouth plundered mine, and within moments, I felt his fangs extend, along with something else… His hardness pressed against me.

When he finally let me up for air, I chuckled. “What was that for?”

“I love your fighting spirit,” he admitted with what looked like a rueful smile. “Watching you kick ass and take names gets me going.”

His deep purple eyes darted to my lips as lightning crackled in the distance and thunder rumbled ominously.

“But if we try to fight like this, we’ll probably just get ourselves killed.” His palm cupped my face. “We can help you take the edge off in a different way.”

“We?” I asked, my lips quirking up.

Hudson was straight, and we were alone. The fact that he would think to suggest including the others made me curious what he had in mind.

He smirked. “It sounded like Nico and Jax are finally getting along.”

“I can confirm that.” That was putting it mildly.

After breakfast yesterday, Nico and Jax had returned to my room for another romp, and I’d lost count of how many times Nico had made Jax come throughout the day. I rejoined them in the afternoon, and afterward, we all collapsed into an exhausted pile of limbs.

“Then maybe it’s time we have a proper coven celebration. We missed our chance on the night of Lughnasa.”

“You don’t mind having Nico in the same room—”

“With his hands all over you and Jax?” Hudson grinned. “I just want to see you happy, killer. And since we can’t go off killing things yet, this is the next best idea I can offer.”

I grinned as lightning flashed above us and the rain set in. “Lead the way, Mr. Agent in Charge.”

Chapter Twenty-One

Mel

Back at the Roost, Tempest made herself comfortable on the couch. Our antics never seemed to bother her.

Hudson pulled me down the hallway and yelled, “Nico! Jax! Mel needs you!”

I chuckled and kissed him, and he began taking off my demon hunter armor while pushing me along. Like some four-legged monster, we made our way, bouncing off walls along the way. When he got my armor off, he started stripping everything else off of me, only pausing momentarily to get my shirt over my head.
