I’m lost for words and it only seems to amuse him more as he steps away with a soft chuckle.

“You can turn around, I'm still fully covered.”

“I don’t trust you.”

“Trust that the only way you’ll ever get me naked is by begging for it.”

I turn around, glaring at him when I realize he still has the towel securely around his waist. “I would never.”

He smirks as though I’ve just challenged him.Fuck.

“We’ll see.”

“You are so… so… irritating!” I sigh. “Just say I can come help at the shelter already.”

He ignores me as he goes over to his closet and pulls a shirt over his head. I turn away quickly when he winks at me right before he drops the towel to pull on his bottoms. When he clears his throat, I peek around and see him fully dressed, watching me with enjoyment.

“If I say yes, will you drop the work thing?”

“You mean working at the bar?”

“No, I mean working in general. Just stop worrying about it for right now.”

“I’m not some charity case.”

“I mean… you do have quite the sob story, Katie.”

I give him a dirty look but he just flashes me an innocent smile. Bastard.

“One month.”

He looks at me confused.

“I’ll drop it for one month while I figure everything out with the medical proxy and my dad and—” I can’t even bring myself to say Doctor Thorne’s name out loud. “In a month things will be better. I won’t be some pathetic girl with a sob story, and if you’ll still have me as a roommate, then I’ll find a way to pay you for it.”

Despite the reasonable compromise, Ax doesn’t look thrilled. He stays silent for a while until finally he just nods.

“Deal. You can ride with Eli to the shelter. Asher and I have some pick ups to do. Go get ready. No revealing clothing and no jewelry.”

I nod my head and rush to my room as I shout a thank you. I run into Eli, literally run into him, in the hallway and he laughs at me.

“Where are you rushing off to?”

“I was actually gonna change and come find you. Ax says I can ride with you to the shelter.”

Eli looks surprised but smiles. “I’m sure the ladies will love another woman to talk to.”

I pull on black tights and a black t-shirt dress before sliding on sneakers. I’m pulling my hair into a bun as I head out to the garage and find Eli waiting for me. “Mostly gonna need you watching the main floor tonight. Show the women where to find blankets and stuff if they need it. I’ll show you around when we get there.”

“It’s awesome you guys started this.”

“It was Ax, honestly,” Eli says, glancing at me. “He didn’t like that women had nowhere nearby to go for a safe space to sleep.”

“I’m guessing there is a backstory to that.”

He nods. “Probably not what you are thinking. But it’s not my story to tell. You’ll meet Asher’s sister there, though. She helps out a few nights a week. Does most of the laundry and plays with the kids.”

“Are there a lot of kids there?”
