That was what best friends did for each other.

* * * *

Drake looked at Ajax, his heart racing as he took in the man’s striking features. His gray eyes were like steel, and Drake felt pinned in place by his gaze. “Was there something y-you wanted to talk to me a-about?” He felt foolish for not being able to form a coherent thought in the man’s presence.

Someone needed to shoot him and put him out of his misery. No doubt Ajax looked at him like a stammering idiot. It was not a look Drake was going for.

“You know,” Ajax said, leaning closer, “I have a feeling you’re not being completely honest with me.”

Drake met the guy’s gaze. His heart pounded as Ajax moved even closer, his scent enveloping Drake. It was sinful how good the guy smelled.

“How so?” Drake swallowed, suppressing the urge to pull at the collar of his shirt like they always did in the movies or in cartoons. He and Ajax hadn’t known each other twenty-four hours, so he had no clue what Ajax thought he was lying about.

“Why did you run away yesterday?” Ajax looked as if he really wanted to know, as if Drake’s answer was that important to him. Drake had no idea why, either.

“I didn’t,” Drake lied. “I, uh, had something important to do.”

The only important thing he’d had to do was run like a scared bitch. It was the truth. Ajax had overwhelmed him, sending Drake into a panic. Like now, with how close the guy was, how good he smelled, how badly Drake wanted to pull the guy to him and kiss the shit out of him.

Drake wasn’t used to such overpowering feelings. Yes, he had past boyfriends, but they were a fizzle compared to the “pop” he felt whenever Ajax was near him.

Like Drake was a powder keg of lust, ready to explode, and Ajax was the damn match. Already Drake was sweating like he was standing in the direct sunlight. His palms were clammy, and he could practically feel perspiration dotting his forehead.

Ajax leaned in even closer, his breath warm against Drake’s ear. The tiny puffs of breath made Drake shiver. “Do you know what I think?” he whispered.

Drake had no idea where this was going, but if Ajax wanted to whisper things into his ear for the rest of the day, who was Drake to stop him? Not that he wanted to. He liked having Ajax so close that the guy might as well have sat in his lap.

“What?”

“I think you’re scared.” Ajax slid his finger up the buttons on Drake’s shirt then teased his neck by tracing his finger along the skin. “But you don’t have to be. I won’t hurt you, Drake.”

“I’m not scared,” Drake said, forcing himself to meet Ajax’s gaze. “I’m just not sure…”

“Not sure of what?” Ajax asked, his eyes searching Drake’s.

“Not sure if you…” The words died in Drake’s throat because he had no flipping idea what he was trying to say. He searched his mind for something, but he got nothing.

“If I what?” Ajax prompted.

“If you’re interested,” Drake said finally, as if the words had popped into his mind and he’d latched onto them. “In me, I mean.”

Ajax grinned, his teeth flashing white against his tanned skin. “Oh, I’m interested, all right.”

Drake felt a surge of heat at the admission, his body responding to that declaration. “Really?” he asked breathlessly.

“Oh, yes.” Ajax’s finger moved back down Drake’s shirt, and then he pulled his hand away. “In fact, I’d say I’m very interested.”

When two of Drake’s best friends had found gorgeous boyfriends, Drake had been jealous. Not mean-spirited jealous, just envious. Now that he had a gorgeous guy hitting on him, Drake wanted to hide. He was no good at flirting, sucked at expressing himself, and was Ajax high or something? Why was he interested in Drake when the guy could have anyone he wanted?

But Drake was too chicken to ask why Ajax was flirting with him. He liked the attention. He’d yet to tear his gaze away from Ajax, too. Maybe he was afraid that if he blinked, Ajax would dissolve right in front of him and Drake would realize this was nothing more than a dream.

A hot dream, but a dream, nonetheless.

Ajax leaned in and brushed his lips lightly against Drake’s. The kiss was soft and gentle, but it set Drake’s body on fire. It was the first time he had ever been kissed by a guy this handsome, and it was not at all how he had imagined it. It was better. Ajax pulled back slightly and looked at Drake, his arm still draped across the back of Drake’s chair.

“How’s your morning going so far?” Ajax asked.

It took a second for Drake’s brain to reboot. He wanted another kiss, only deeper this time. Who was he kidding? Drake wanted to crawl into Ajax’s lap and beg the man to do whatever he wanted to him.
