When Tido returned from the bathroom, Elijah and Drake were in the kitchen. Only those two would get hungry in a crisis.

“So, are you two mates?” Drake asked as he swallowed his mouthful. “I saw the way he was sniffing you at the ice cream hut.”

“They’re mates.” Elijah snickered. “Look how badly he’s blushing.”

“Will you two stop?” Tido noticed that Kenji wasn’t in the room with them. He walked out without answering his friends and found Kenji in his bedroom. “Is it okay if I come in?”

Kenji looked up from his phone. “You never have to ask.”

Walking in, Tido looked around. The style of the room somehow didn’t fit Kenji. Not that Tido knew his mate’s style, but it didn’t seem right. The bed was a full bed, and Kenji was tall and muscular. The curtains and carpeting were dark maroon, and the dressers were solid white. “Your stuff?”

Kenji glanced around. “The place came furnished. I would have made the room entirely white.”

Not a color scheme Tido would pick. White was too hard to keep clean. “I knew the people who lived here before it became a rental. It was a middle-aged couple with two kids. They divorced. The husband got the kids, as far as gossip goes, and they sold the house. I don’t know the new owner, but he made it into a rental.”

“Sorry to hear that couple divorced.” Kenji sat on the bed and stuffed his feet into a pair of very nice black boots.

“Everyone saw it coming.” Tido sat on the bed beside Kenji. “They argued all the time. You could hear them across the street.” He ran his hand over the comforter, wondering if it smelled like Kenji. “So, demons?”

Kenji sighed as he sat up. “Demons, vampires, winged beasts, and so on. They exist, Tido. Even fairies. There are different realms that live alongside the human realm.”

“All of them have powers?”

“Yes. But when it comes to demons, each is born with a special ability. Clearly the one that came for me can wield electricity.”

“Why did that demon come here?” Tido asked. “Why was he looking for you?”

“I have no idea. I haven’t been to the demon realm in ages. For the past one hundred years, I’ve lived with my pack. Before that, I just roamed around, finding odd jobs, until the stock market became a thing. Had a really good teacher in how to invest. Still, as far as I know, I haven’t made any enemies. None that would send a demon to do their dirty work.”

“Do you think he’ll be back?” Tido hoped not. He’d never been so afraid in his life. Not even the time he’d nearly drowned compared to what he felt today. Not only was he scared for himself but for Kenji. The demon had been a lot bigger than Tido’s mate. He thought for sure Kenji would lose the fight.

“I’m not sure.” Kenji took Tido’s hand in his. “Until I find out what’s going on, I think it best you don’t come over here. I don’t want you getting caught up in that shit again.”

“Oh.”

“I’m not saying we won’t be together, Tido. I’ll come to your house instead.”

That didn’t make any sense to Tido. If the demon found Kenji here, then he would be able to track the wolf shifter across the street. But he wasn’t going to argue. If he did, Kenji might say they couldn’t see each other at all, and after mating the guy, Tido felt a deep connection to his mate, a connection that felt like he’d known Kenji his entire life.

“Mason and Ajax will be arriving soon.” Kenji planted a kiss on Tido’s temple. “Why don’t we go see what your buddies are doing and if they’ve devoured all my food?”

With a smile, Tido got up and followed Kenji out of the room. Just as they cleared the hallway, the doorbell rang. Tido’s anxiety went through the roof as he looked at Kenji.

“It’s probably Mason and Ajax. Just to be on the safe side, go into the kitchen.” No sooner had Kenji spoken than Elijah and Drake walked out of the kitchen. Drake was holding a long knife, and Elijah had a toaster.

Tido looked at the toaster.

“It was the closest weapon I could find,” Elijah said. “Drake already got the knife.”

Kenji glanced out the living room window. “It’s your mates. Go put my toaster back before you hurt yourself.”

“Don’t you mean Drake should put back the knife?” Tido asked.

“I’ve seen Elijah around things that need to be plugged in. Ask him about the coffee machine at Bluebird Café.”

“That wasn’t my fault,” Elijah defended. “Ajax shouldn’t have such a complicated coffee machine.”

With a shake of his head, Kenji answered the door. Mason and Ajax stepped inside. Elijah dropped the toaster and ran to his mate. Tido winced as the toaster crashed on the floor, the side panel flying off.
