Those gorgeous gray eyes narrowed. “That’s not answering my question.”

“Sorry about your onion rings.” Kenji racked his brain, trying to find a way out of this. “How about I make up for your spill with dinner?”

Tido narrowed his eyes just the slightest. “First, it wasn’t you who spilled them. Second, you still haven’t answered my question, which tells me Drake did call you.”

“I met Drake a few weeks ago.” They were getting closer to their street, and Kenji felt like he was running out of time to woo his mate. “His boyfriend, Ajax, is an old friend.”

“You mean his mate.”

Kenji did a doubletake. “You…know?”

“That’s not important, and I’m not selling out a friend.” Tido slid his gaze toward the side window. “I appreciate the ride, but you won’t be in town for long, so why bother trying to become friends?”

“First, I know Drake told you.”

Tido gaped at him, as if Kenji had come to that conclusion through the power of telepathy.

“Second, since you say this town is so boring, why not show me the exciting parts? I don’t see why we can’t be friends, Tido. I’m actually a pretty fun guy.”

Tido huffed and crossed his arms.

“Did I do something wrong?” Kenji eased his grip on the steering wheel before he fucked around and crushed it beneath his palm. “We just officially met, and you’ve been pretty frosty toward me. Do you want to go back to spying on me through your window?”

“I—” Tido sputtered as he looked at Kenji. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. I don’t spy on people. I casually observe them.”

Kenji tried his best to imitate David Attenborough’s voice. “In its suburban surroundings, the wolf can be observed taking out the trash or soaking up the sun. While happier chasing animals in their natural form, the wolf is quite content being human as well. It preens when it knows a cute twink is watching it from afar and stretches its sinewy muscles to show its prowess, scaring away all other rivals.”

Tido’s lips quirked. “You’re not funny.”

“I don’t think I did too bad.” Kenji gave his mate a cocky grin. “Do you think I can narrate an animal documentary, or is my lifelong dream crushed?”

This time Tido laughed. “I think you should stick to your day job.”

Kenji placed a hand over his left pec. “You’re breaking my heart. Now I have no idea what I’m going to do with the rest of my life. I just thought I had a shot at being a fantastic narrator.”

“Honestly, you do.” A fine blush stole over Tido’s cheeks. “You have a very nice voice.”

Now Kenji really wanted to preen. “Thanks, and you have amazing gray eyes. I like the way the ring around them is an even darker gray.”

Tido looked away. “No flirting.”

“It was an observation.” Kenji had no idea why his mate was shutting him down. Didn’t Tido feel the pull? That instant connection between mates? Wasn’t he as strongly attracted to Kenji as Kenji was to him?

“Thanks.” Tido sat up straighter as they turned onto their street.

“So, about that dinner…”

“I’m flattered, but I can’t.” Tido looked as if he was trying to find the right words. “I don’t think we should start anything.”

Kenji’s heart really was breaking. “That’s awfully presumptuous of you.” He had to save face and ease Tido’s ruffled feathers. “Who said we were going to start anything? I was hoping you could show me around town, maybe share an ice cream, and become friends since your friend is mated to my friend.”

“Oh.” The blush deepened to scarlet as Tido looked at him. “I just thought…I’m sorry I jumped to conclusions.”

“I was just thinking we could have dinner and you could give me the juicy gossip on everyone in town.” Kenji winked, hoping his foot was back in the door. “I’m assuming you grew up in Midnight Falls like Drake did, or am I wrong?”

“You’re right.”

Kenji nodded. “So you have to know at least something about a lot of people, and what better way to have fun than to gossip?” Kenji didn’t gossip, but he was pulling every trick out of his rainbow-colored bag to keep Tido interested.
