My heart sank a bit at his vulnerability.

But he doesn’t know the complete truth.

“Just… don’t.”

He doesn’t know that I’vetriedto commit my soul to Purgatory.

Caius simply won’t let me.

“I love you, Celeste. Your family loves you.”

I nodded, choking back sudden emotion. “I know.”

“Please, think with your head and not just your heart, okay?”

I nodded because that’s all I could do. I couldn’t tell him what I wanted because I wasn’t sure if it was even attainable.

Uncle Lucas reached through the window to give my shoulder a gentle squeeze, then walked through the fog back to his car. I watched as he slowly maneuvered his way around my car, the heavy mist making any efforts to wave goodbye through the window futile.

I exhaled a deep, long breath.

Celeste

The door to Caius’ office was open slightly, and as I made my way down the windowed hallway, I could see a patch of light filtering through the gap. When I reached the door, I could hear the soft crackle of the fireplace, and I gently pushed the door open to see the flames dancing behind him. He didn’t look up from whatever he was reading, with his elbows propped up on the surface and one hand running through his dark hair. I snuck in as quietly as I could, gently clicking the door closed behind me.

Without looking up, he muttered, “About time.”

I grinned from ear to ear as I approached his side of the desk. He dropped his arms and swiveled his chair in my direction, meeting me as my body found his.

“I’ve been waiting for you,” he rasped as his hands found the back of my legs, bringing them up onto his lap. I placed a knee on each side, straddling him, and I could feel Caius’ hands find their way to my ass. He palmed me, gripping me through my dark jeans with his large hands and long fingers.

“Double shift?” he asked.

I nodded in response to him. “You talked to my uncle?” I inquired, tilting my head to the side as I trailed a finger vertically down the left side of his neck.

Caius nodded, and I could tell he was more focused on where my touch was headed rather than where the conversation was going. When he didn’t elaborate, I spoke again.

“What made him change his mind?”

Caius shrugged. “Sometimes it’s just not a good fit.”

“He didn’t give a real reason why?”

“No.”

I thought back to the car, when Uncle Lucas made it known that he was concerned for me.

Maybe his family was the reason why he changed his mind.

MaybeIwas the reason.

Whatever it may be, it was over now, and I could put that problem out of my mind permanently.

Turning back to the sight of Caius’ body, I pressed my thighs down onto his lap just a little bit harder, enough to bring his full focus back to me.

His hands roamed all over my backside, but always found their way back to the curves of my ass.

Instinctively, I rolled my hips against his growing erection, forcing a low rumble to escape from his throat. My lips found his in a welcoming embrace, and my tongue slid into his mouth in search for him. The kisses grew heavier, our touches increased in their heat, and the lust was only beginning.
