This can’t be happening.

“Roll fucking call!” Rocco bellows, and feet scurry behind me, but I can’t fucking look at them. Not yet.

Zoe is suddenly there, her arms wrapping around me as she hides her head in my chest, and I’m helpless to hold myself back from her. My arms weave around her, holding her tight. Close. Never ever wanting to let her go.

I listen as everyone says their name, mentally ticking the names off the list, and someone mentions that Slasher is here, but he’s down the road in the shadows with his brother, not ready to leave him.

That makes me crack, my fucking eyes brimming with tears.

That is until I realize which person is unaccounted for.

My head darts in Rocco’s direction, and I see him already staring at me.

I shake my head, and his lips thin, giving me a slight nod.

I spin then, Zoe in tow, my eyes scanning over each person and it’s like they’ve come to the same realization.

No.

“Gunner!” I bellow. “Where are you?!”

He doesn’t answer, and some of the Cruz Cunts start sobbing again, huddled together, holding each other up.

I peel Zoe from me, our eyes locking, and I can see she’s hurting, but this time it isn’t for her. It’s for me.

“Gunner!” I call, stalking away from them as the sirens get closer. “Gunner!”

I stand before the inferno of bikes, seeing the lump that half resembles something that may have once been a body, and I shake my head, pulling my phone from my pocket.

Unlocking it, I pull up Gunner’s number and hit call.

The faint ringing of a phone sounds to my right, and I follow the sound to find a phone laying on the road, about six feet from where the inferno is, and the name flashing across the screen is my name. This is Gunner’s phone.

No.

“Take the van and everyone get out of here. Get to Dirty Diamonds. Gray and I will stay behind to deal with Slasher and the authorities.” Rocco bellows from nearby, and I slowly step away from the fire, as the fire trucks round the corner up the street.

“Zoe stays with me.” I bark, my voice raspy from the smoke, and I guess from my emotions as well.

Striding up to me, Rocco claps me on the shoulder. “She’s better off going with the others.”

“No. She fucking stays with me at all fucking times.” I growl, getting in his face and his lips thin as he studies my face for a few beats.

“Fine. If you insist.”

“I fucking insist.” I snap, and Rocco nods, stepping away as Zoe steps up to me warily.

“Gray, if it’s better I go with the others—”

I cut off her words with my hand wrapping around her throat and I press my nose to hers. “I protect what’s mine. You stay fucking glued to me from now on and until every last fucking Reaper has been sent to hell.”

The man Zoe met on the stage at Dirty Diamonds is here now. The monster has returned, and even though she can see it in my expression, and feel it vibrating from me, she doesn’t show an ounce of fear.

“Okay,” she whispers, maintaining eye contact with me, and I growl.

“I won’t hurt you.”

I’m not sure why I feel the need to say those words but somehow, she gets it, giving me a stern nod.
