Cain winks. “You won’t believe how it can drive people crazy to look at a color that is uncomfortable. So when I keep them awake and it’s all they see… it yields some interesting results.”

I don’t fucking doubt it. Not in the slightest.

“I’ll show you all of it another day,” Gray says, probably more to make sure Cain doesn’t go off topic.

Cain leads us to the furthest part, where two glass boxes are placed. They’re small, but big enough to fit a person if they’re crouched.

“Oh,” I exclaim, smiling as I realize that’s exactly what’s happening. “They’re in there?”

Bowing, Cain sweeps his hand out. “Welcome to the black and white room. Well, boxes. Well… you know what I mean.”

And I do, since one box is completely black and the other white.

“We can see in,” Cain explains. “But they can’t see us or hear us.”

“Soundproof glass,” Gray mutters.

“Yes,” Cain confirms. Then he pulls his phone out of his pocket and opens an app. “But there’s a microphone in each box, so we can still hear them. And a speaker, so I’ve been talking to Rusty.”

Cain taps away on his phone and suddenly the sound of nails on a chalkboard sounds, which prompts Rusty to groan. “No more.”

“And Irina?” I ask, folding my arms over my chest. “What have you done to her?”

Gray answers. “If he knows what’s good for him, he hasn’t touched her. Irina is yours, Princess.”

The sick words shouldn’t fill me with joy, but they do. “Really?” I ask excitedly.

“Really,” he chuckles. “Though I have a few suggestions.”

I’m not opposed to suggestions because apart from Cara’s training, I don’t know shit about it. But there are a few things I absolutely want the crazy bitch to suffer.

Holding my hand out, I demand, “I need a knife.”

Gray doesn’t even hesitate in giving me his, and as soon as I’m clutching it, I look at Cain. “How do I get in there?” I ask, pointing at the box that definitely won’t fit two people.

He chuckles. “Wait there for a second.”

I take Gray’s hand, using my body to tell him that I want him close. This might be my mission, but we’re a team. When I say ‘I’, it should automatically involve him.

“Here,” Cain says, returning with three pairs of glasses. “They’re night vision glasses. Before opening one of the surfaces of the box, I’ll black the room out so she can’t see anything.”

“She’ll feel the shift in the air,” Gray points out.

Cain shrugs. “She will. But she’s handcuffed to her chair. A special request from our princess.”

I beam. “Let’s do it.”

We put the glasses on, and Cain does everything he described. Then he moves out of the way, making sure to stay in the background as Gray and I move closer to Irina.

“Irina,” I sing-song, using my own voice this time. “I’m so glad to finally catch up with you.”

“Fuck you, Zoe!”

I cluck at her. “Where are your manners? We’re talking Mama to Mama so you should show some respect.”

She bares her teeth and lets out a string of curses.

I try my best to keep my emotions locked down, but the longer I look at her, the more impossible it becomes. This is the woman who’s responsible for destroying my family, for my captivity. She played mind games with me that in some ways were a lot worse than Gunner’s abuse. And she killed my dad. Even if he didn’t die by her hand, it was by her actions.
