As the Reaper removes the first tooth, the crunching sound reverberates around the room. Or maybe it’s just me.

“Stop it!” I scream. “Let her go. She didn’t mean to.”

I ignore the mental warning bells going off in my head. I know I should let things play out and not get myself involved, but how can I live with myself if I just sit back?

“Do you want to take her punishment instead?” Rusty’s voice cuts through the noise. “Is that what you want, Zoe? To take her place?”

“N-no,” I stutter.

He nods. “I didn’t think so. Sit the fuck down and stay out of shit that’s nothing to do with you.”

Everything in me balks at the order, and I don’t heed it. “No,” I spit.

“You have ten seconds to get your ass back here, or you’re taking her place,” he demands.

I don’t move.

“Ten. Nine.”

I quickly look at the girl. Blood and drool spill from her mouth that’s still forced open.

“Eight.”

Shit, I don’t want that to be me.

“Seven.”

But I also don’t… another snap sounds as the blond Reaper removes the second tooth.

“Six.”

My shoulders slump as I return to my seat next to Rusty. Shame and fear course through me, and if I’m honest, disgust at myself for taking the cowardly way out.

“Good girl,” Rusty praises, and it makes me sick.

I force my eyes shut as the girl loses another three teeth. Sadly, I hear it all, and I know the sound of the teeth being ripped from her gums is going to haunt me for a very long time. Possibly forever.

“There,” the blond Reaper announces, smirking at me. “I’m done.” He gestures for the women to let her go, which they do. One even removes the gag. Then the Reaper turns to one of the prospects and tells him to take the girl to his house as she’s no longer welcome here.

If I thought the girl was hysterical before, it’s nothing compared to now. As soon as she learns she’s being moved to another house, she crawls to the Reaper that just took her teeth.

“P-please… I-I want to s-stay.”

He doesn’t spare her a glance as he kicks her away.

I’m not aware I’m crying until one of the women taunts me. “Look at her, she’s crying like a fucking baby. Boohoo, bitch. Boo-fucking-hoo.”

Though the words light a fire on my temper, it mostly makes me feel sad. I miss the Cruz Cunts. Their camaraderie and loving banter. I especially miss Alana, who I’d gotten really close to. The fact that she’s a fair bit older than me, probably around Gray’s age, never seemed to matter. We bonded, and that’s all there is to it.

If she was here right now, she’d tell me to keep my head down, and when I didn’t, she’d be there, ready to hug me and tell me that everything would be okay. But the longer I’m here, the less I believe that.

The room erupts into cheers when my dad and Irina return with Johnny in tow. His face is covered by a smiling cartoon mask, which just adds to the creep factor.

“What took you so long?” Rusty barks, impatiently.

Irina smirks and makes a big show of daintily wiping the corners of her mouth with her index finger. “No reason, dear brother,” she sing-songs.

Brother? Wait… are Rusty and Irina siblings? I narrow my eyes and study them, but when I don’t see any similarities, I decide it must be a club thing.
