He and Dante used to be surfing buddies, and somewhere along the way they turned into business associates of the organized crime variety.

“You’ve met them before.” I point out but he shakes his head.

“Not like this. To be in the room with them for discussions and planning…” he rakes his hand roughly through his long dark hair. “What if I say something dumb?”

And there it is.

Slasher is still getting used to the fact that I wanted him to be my right-hand man, and any minute now, Dante and Baz are going to walk through our clubhouse doors to meet with the new leadership of the Cruz Kings for the first time. Officially.

If anyone should be feeling nervous it should be me, but I’ve been in these meetings with them before. Hell, I was once part of Dante’s Diamond Crew before Rocco formed the Cruz Kings, so I already have history with him and Baz, but Slasher has only ever been standing on the outside of this particular circle.

Now he’s on the inside.

Clapping him on the shoulder, I lock eyes with his dark ones and give him a reassuring squeeze. “You won’t say anything dumb, brother.” I ball my fist and tap it over his heart. “Your head and heart are why I chose you to stand beside me. You’re the best man for the job.”

His lip curls. “I want revenge. Are they gonna have a fucking problem with that?”

Shaking my head, I smirk. “Fuck no. As long as it serves the community, there won’t be a problem.”

A bell chimes, and we all glance over to the bar where Tex moves to a panel and looks at a screen.

Part of our new security measures is a camera and motion detector at the front gate. Now, in addition to having a couple of men man the gates, we get notified when someone is there, and the men manning the gates aren’t permitted to open them until me, Slasher, Tex or Munroe give the all clear.

Once the Reaper threat is eliminated, we will loosen those rules, but for now, this place is Fort-fucking-Knox.

“It’s Dante,” Tex calls over his shoulder, and a hush falls over the room.

“Let them through,” I call back, my eyes shifting back to Slasher. “You and me, brother. These men are relying on us now. Are you with me?”

A low growl rumbles in Slasher’s chest before he claps me on the shoulder this time. “Fuck yeah, I am.”

Gesturing my head toward the back room, I instruct my second in command. “Head on through to church. Rocco and Cara are in there already. I’ll be in soon.”

Slasher nods before his eyes drift across the room to where Alana and Zoe sit. When my gaze follows, I see Alana’s sights locked with Slasher’s like they are having a silent conversation before he turns and leaves the room.

Dante and Baz enter the club like they fucking own it, but I actually don’t hate that. If it wasn’t for Dante, we wouldn’t have this club, so even though he’s not a member or a founder, it was with his support that Rocco started the MC, and he has worked alongside us to try to keep the community safe, and in our control.

“There he is. The new ruler of the kingdom,” Dante smirks, his boots heavy as he strides through the room.

As he passes Zoe’s table, I don’t miss the way she flinches as he nears and shrinks in on herself.

I fucking hate seeing how much she’s affected by the presence of other men. Especially the good ones.

I manage to drag my eyes from her in time to accept Dante’s hand in a shake right as the gate bell goes off again.

“What’s that?” Dante asks, looking around but not spotting where the bell sounded from, so I gesture to Tex, who is again, checking the monitor.

“Security measures.”

“Cain is here,” Tex calls this time, and I nod as Dante’s brows dart high.

“Let him in,” I respond and Baz joins us, giving me an approving nod.

“Impressive. Now we just have to line the roof with sharp shooters and rig up some booby traps.”

Dante and I laugh at Baz’s suggestion and he smirks, reaching his hand out for a shake, too.

“Head on through. Slasher and Rocco are already there,” I tell them, and they make their way through as well.
