Adrian heard loud music coming from inside the house, and he chuckled quietly to himself. He knocked twice, this time a little louder and more urgently, turning apologetically toward Luna.

Sasha appeared in the doorframe, clothed by a towel. She immediately set her sights on Adrian.

“And just what are you doing here at this hour?” she asked, nineties pop music still blaring in the background.

Then she noticed the procession following behind Adrian.

“Oh … Hello.”

“This is my sister, Sasha,” Adrian announced, gesturing between the two of them. “Sasha, this is Luna.”

Sasha smiled. Then, still in a towel, she ran up to embrace Luna.

Adrian could tell how immensely uncomfortable Luna was.

“Uh … Sasha.” Adrian coughed. “Do you think you could get dressed? We’ve just got a guest.”

Sasha separated from Luna and then looked disbelievingly at her brother. “Look at you, showing up in the middle of the night, demanding I get dressed for you.”

Then she looked between the two of them and back at Adrian’s enforcers. “Yeah, okay,” she said. “Give me five minutes.”

Adrian wondered if she fully perceived the vibe. A simple smell would have told her everything she needed to know. After all, Luna was fated to be the alpha female of the tribe.

Whether she accepted that title or rejected it at all was up in the air. These were unconventional circumstances.

“She’s certainly interesting,” Luna said indifferently.

It was almost funny how much she tried to pretend she had no place in any of this despite all evidence to the contrary. She probably thought she’d be going back to her cabin and sneaking out in the morning.

The door opened, and Sasha appeared wearing an orange cocktail dress.

“Are you going to introduce me to your woman, Adrian?” Sasha asked. “I didn’t even know you were dating anybody. You never tell me anything anymore.”

Adrian coughed again as though hinting she should better read the crowd.

“We’re not exactly dating,” Luna offered. “But your brother would like to think we are.”

Sasha looked back and forth, not trying to hide her confusion.

“Not dating. Then …”

Adrian sniffed, hoping she’d get the message. When that failed, he sniffed the air more insistently.

“Who are you exactly then?” Sasha asked.

“Well, it’s a bit of a funny story,” Adrian said.

“I don’t think it’s very funny at all,” Luna interrupted.

“The thing about it is …”

“We sort of bonded,” Luna said, surprising Adrian.

He wondered if she could sense the tension in the air or if she was simply getting annoyed at having to explain everything.

Or perhaps she just wanted this awkward encounter to end as quickly as possible.

“That’s fantastic,” Sasha shouted, once again embracing Luna.
