A slight knock rang out coming from the door.

“Typical,” she muttered to herself, taking a bite of her spaghetti and burning her tongue immediately.

Of course, he wasn’t just going to leave her alone. He had probably just left to grab something.

She imagined him telling her he was going to stay the night, and she found herself chuckling in disbelief at the same time that a part of her longed for that terrible fate.

Luna stood at the door, opening it carelessly. She never considered he could have sent assassins to neutralize her.

It would have been all too convenient, somehow faking a mating bond to lure her into a sense of calm. In reality, he could have been working with Victor all along, which explained perfectly why she could smell him in the air.

Luna opened the door to see Sasha standing in her cocktail dress again.

Or he just sent his kid sister to spy on me, she thought.

“Dear God,” Sasha said as Luna pulled open the door. “I thought he’d never leave.”

Luna furrowed her eyebrows and pursed her lips. “Did you need something?” she asked.

But no sooner had Luna said anything before Sasha burst inside.

“He made you spaghetti? He mustreallylike you.” She was already in the kitchen, lifting the lids off of all the pots and taking a whiff inside. “Of course, spaghetti is easy to make. So you might be thinking, why is this any special treatment at all?”

Luna wasn’t thinking that. But Sasha kept talking over her anyway.

“Well, he makes almost everything from scratch.” She picked up the box of pasta noodles. “Except pasta noodles, apparently? Only he does that sometimes. God, he’s all over the place with you. We’d better get to the bottom of this.”

As Luna squinted, watching Sasha invade the cabin with disbelief, Sasha took a fork and stuck it in the pot still on the burner. She twirled a strand of spaghetti around the tongs, stuffing it into her mouth with satisfaction.

“Oh, you didn’t have to microwave that, by the way. Maybe you let the plate he made you get cold, but the food’s still perfectly warm.”

“Lovely,” Luna replied, trying to make it as clear as possible that Sasha wasn’t welcome.

“I know. Rookie mistake.”

Luna looked down at her plate, realizing that, in spite of herself, she had completely lost her appetite. But then the mix of seasonings coming from her plate and in the pot was enticing enough. She was certain she’d regain her appetite as soon as this stranger left her home.

“Spaghetti’s really easy to make but really hard to master,” Sasha said absentmindedly, taking another noodle into her mouth. “That’s the secret. My bro’s completely mastered it. Meatballs and all.”

Without waiting for her reply, Sasha continued. “Oh, but if you’re not going to eat all this … Adrian really made a … then I should probably help you clean up, huh?”

And not really asking, Sasha took a washrag to the counter, cleaning up the barely noticeable sauce stains. Luna watched as Sasha took over the kitchen, moving the pot into the fridge while loudly humming to herself.

At the same time, Luna looked down at her phone, noting how late it was already getting. She almost couldn’t take it anymore. “What the hell is your problem?”

Sasha stopped, staring at her, letting her jaw slacken. “What are you talking about?”

“I’ve been waiting all day for some peace and quiet, and yet you feel it proper to storm in here unannounced. Did your brother send you here to spy on me?”

Sasha stood dumbfounded before quietly confronting her. “Well,” she said. “I just wanted to help my new sister-in-law. We barely got to talk.”

At this, Luna put her foot down. “I’m not your sister-in-law,” she said. “Like I told you, I’m just passing through.”

In confusion, Sasha approached her, still carrying the dirty wet rag. She stood directly next to Luna and then stared her dead in the eye.

“But you and my brother formed the mating bond,” Sasha said.

And Luna immediately felt as though she was speaking to a child. A very old, fully matured child who hadn’t advanced beyond an overwhelming need to see her brother happy.
