Luna laughed in response.

They sat beside each other on the two recliners, Luna eating from a cold plate of spaghetti while Sasha drank from her wine glass. She was relieved the girl didn’t chastise her for not reheating her plate.

Through the night, they talked to each other until the wee hours of the morning. Luna felt like she told her everything except for the important details, while Sasha spilled anything and everything about the pack and her brother, trusting Luna far too readily. For her part, Luna was intrigued to hear about the trivial gossip of the day-to-day pack, like that Bruce and Devdan didn’t get along.

She could sense the morning approaching. But she was no longer stressed, thinking about all the things she should be doing or all the places she should be instead of here.

She was finally just content to live in the moment.

SIX

ADRIAN

When knocking didn’t do enough, Adrian rang the doorbell, standing at the cabin door while looking down at his watch.

He waited five minutes before the door finally opened, the sun barely rising over the distant horizon.

“Where the hell is the fire?” Luna asked.

Her eyes were half-shut, and Adrian smelled his sister and the scent of alcohol on her. Thanks to his sensitive shifter nose, there was no mistaking it.

But Adrian was far too distracted to be concerned by the implication as Luna stood there in pink panties and a white tank top, nearly every detail of her body on display. Adrian desperately wanted not to stare and could feel the tightness in his jeans.

His animalistic biology threatened to overwhelm him. There was a time and a place, but he nearly lost control as he gazed over the sweat-slicked contours of her sun-glazed skin. He wanted to lean her against the doorframe and take her here, though he figured she’d have several things to say about that. Whether she was fated to be his mate or not.

“I’m sorry,” Adrian said. “Did I not tell you we’d be going out for breakfast?”

Luna leaned against the side of the door, her hair disheveled, eyes now fully closed.

“No! Why would you do that?” Luna slumped, barely able to stand on her feet.

“Okay. Well, I have to go get breakfast with some of the pack’s wisest members,” Adrian replied. “And I was hoping you’d be there.”

Luna leaned into her hand, and Adrian swore he could hear her snoring.

He considered just walking away.

“But why do I have to be there? Why can’t I just sleep?”

On this, Adrian had to put his foot down. He briefly considered just letting Luna be, but he needed her for this. There were very deep personal reasons.

“Is there any way you could get dressed?” Adrian requested. “I can wait here as long as you need. I just have to be somewhere in an hour, and I’d like you by my side.”

For a moment, he thought Luna might simply slam the door on him. Instead, Luna stuck her thumb out, her eyes still closed, then she shut the door on him.

Was that a thumbs-up? But her thumb was sideways, so he wasn’t sure what that meant. Maybe she was simply going back to bed, sleeping off the massive hangover she seemed to be nursing. She must have raided the wine cabinet last night at some point.

Maybe she told him to screw off in some unknown gesture. Despite being unsure whether or not she’d return, he decided to wait. Taking out his cell phone, he dialed a familiar number, pressing the phone to his ear as the waterfall trickled nearby.

“Do you have any idea what time it is?” His sister groggily answered the phone, halfway confirming his suspicions. So this had been her work.

“Seems like you had a pretty good time last night,” Adrian replied.

“You know it.” She sounded half-dead and still seemed very drunk.

“I’m guessing you were showing Luna a good time then?”

“Well, no,” Sasha said. “I was having a good time, but she didn’t seem to be having all that much fun.”
